Sonic Wings 2 continues the story of the previous game. Once again the world is threatened by a mysterious military organization, and an international crisis is brewing. Striking key sites globally using sophisticated weapons and cutting edge military technology. Governments and military forces try to stop the threat but fail to deal with the enemy's advanced weapons and overwhelming forces. So a select group of elite pilots is summoned to fight the organization directly. The pilots are part of the International Secret Rescue Team, which is an elite unit created to deal with situations that regular military cannot handle. Each pilot is given a powerful plane and the most sophisticated weapons. The mission begins with attacks by the pilots on military facilities and formations of the enemy. Their mission, to destroy the enemy's weapons, eliminate key commanders and finally track down the organization behind the global threat. The aircraft move through different areas and the pilots encounter many enemy forces. Fighter planes try to shoot them down, tanks and artillery hit from the ground and heavily armed military machines are present throughout the levels. As the resistance grows, the pilots have to keep pushing ahead. Their planes are equipped with formidable artillery, but munitions and defensive measures still have to be used carefully. The story is not told in long cinematic sequences. Instead the pilots and their objectives are revealed through character dialog, mission events, stage changes and endings. One thing special about the game is that it has multiple endings. The ending may differ the pilot you choose and other elements during the campaign. This encourages players to play the game again as a different character. The pilots’ strange personalities also add to the humor of the storyline. Although the game is set against a backdrop of a global military conflict, the characters themselves are intentionally exaggerated and humorous, giving Sonic Wings 2 a personality that distinguishes it from more serious military shooters.

Sonic Wings 2 is a vertical scrolling shooter game, also known as a shmup. The player's aircraft flies through continuously scrolling stages, with enemies appearing from the top and sides of the screen. Their goal is simple: kill enemies and survive until the end of each stage. However to do this you need to react quickly and have good control of the aircraft. The regular weapon can shoot in a continuous stream. Enemies can pop up out of nowhere and attack before the player has a chance to react, so players should keep shooting whenever they have the opportunity. Power-ups are an important part of the game-play. You will release different items that will improve your aircraft by killing ground targets and enemies. The P power-up increases the power of your main weapon. You can slowly ramp up the firepower of the aircraft by gathering multiple P icons. A more powerful weapon means you can kill enemies faster, which makes the later parts easier. The F power-up is particularly handy because it can instantly upgrade the player's weapon to its top power. Players should make use of these power-ups whenever they come up. Also each aircraft has its own special bomb attack. Bombs can take down enemies and offer an important defensive option in dangerous situations. Bomb supplies are limited, so players need to use them strategically rather than waste them on weak enemies. Aircraft have different characteristics of their weapons. Some may have better standard attacks, others more effective special weapons. So trying different pilots is a huge part of learning the game. As the player progresses the enemy formations become more complex. Larger enemies may shoot out several projectiles at the same time while small fighter planes may attack in groups. There are also stages with ground targets. You can destroy buildings, tanks, artillery positions, ships and other military objects for points and power-ups. Sonic Wings 2's boss battles are some of the most difficult. The screen is dominated by large enemy machines and complex attack patterns. Players need to learn the boss's moves and find safe spots while still attacking. The two-player mode introduces cooperative gameplay. Two pilots can combine, sharing their weapons and bombs to wipe out enemy formations. Cooperation is especially helpful in tough boss battles.

First, pick the pilot and the aircraft you want. Every character has different characteristics, so try several pilots to find out which aircraft fits your playing style. After the stage begins, maneuver your aircraft across the screen using the directional controls. Your plane generally remains in the bottom area and the battlefield scrolls up and down. Press and hold the fire button to continuously attack enemy aircraft and ground targets. Keep shooting even if you don't see an enemy right now, as new enemies can appear quickly. Keep moving to dodge enemy fire. But don’t move for the sake of moving. Positioning is key when you’re dealing with dense projectile patterns. Grab power-ups whenever you can. P icons increase the power of your weapons, and F icons can give you a maximum firepower boost right away. Watch the screen closely for enemies coming in. Some opponents arrive from the side, others from above. If you are surrounded by enemies or if there are too many projectiles to dodge normally, use bombs. Boss battles are great for bombs. Don't waste bombs on small groups of weak foes. Keep them for times when the going gets really tough and they can keep you safe or do a lot of harm. Observe the boss’s movement and shooting during boss battles. Don’t put all your focus on attacking, surviving is just as crucial. In two player mode, work together with your partner. Try to spread out in different areas of the screen but don't get in each other's path. If one player is lower in weapon level, be sure to grab any power-ups you come across, allowing both planes to maintain their firepower. Since Sonic Wings 2 is based on arcade style difficulty, practice counts. The more you play, the easier it becomes to identify enemy patterns and anticipate dangerous attacks.
