Rage of the Dragons is set in a city ruled by crime and powerful gangs. The story is about a group of martial artists who become embroiled in battles involving organized crime, personal vendettas and mysterious criminal organizations. The game is inspired by the Double Dragon universe, especially through the characters Billy and Jimmy. Instead of simply following the original Double Dragon storyline, Rage of the Dragons creates its own alternate universe and introduces a new cast of characters. Billy and Jimmy are twins who are martial artists, but have been separated by circumstances. Their ties to the city’s criminal underworld and their martial-arts background eventually bring them up against powerful enemies. Other characters have their motives. Some want revenge, some want to protect people close to them, some want to settle personal disputes. Every character story has a different reason for entering the tournament. As the game progresses, players come up against stronger opponents. Battles eventually culminate to the strongest fighters and bosses in the game. There is no epic cinematic campaign, the story is told mostly through the introductions, conversations and endings of characters. Different fighters or teams have different takes on what’s happening in the city. The Double Dragon tie-in gives the game an instantly recognizable identity, but its tag-team fighting mechanics and expanded roster differentiate it from the original beat-'em-up series.

Rage of the Dragons is a 2-player tag team fighting game. Matches are played in teams and players select two fighters. Switching between characters is one of the most important parts of the gameplay. Each character has different strengths, weaknesses, special attacks and movement traits. Players choose partners that complement each other and understand when to use each fighter. In a match, one character is fighting while the second character waits outside the main fighting area. If necessary, players can swap characters, giving the weaker fighter a chance to recover while their partner steps in. The tag mechanics add a strategic element, as changing at the wrong time can leave the character vulnerable to an attack from the opponent. Normal punches and kicks. Special techniques. Each fighter has different commands and attacks, which can be combined for powerful combos. There are throws and defensive techniques as well, so players can fight back against those who focus too heavily on blocking. Special attacks are powerful attacks that can only be used if you have the right resources. You will need to use your attacks wisely, as spamming special techniques when you don’t know what you’re doing can leave you vulnerable. Both members of a team can participate in powerful combined attacks in the Team Attack system. These attacks are very damaging and are especially effective when your opponent is near death. Players can also create offensive combinations using tag-based strategies. Switching characters at the right time can keep the pressure on and stop your opponent from recovering. The arcade nature of the game makes the battles increasingly difficult. The later stages of the game are more difficult as the enemies are stronger.

Start the game and select 2 fighters to make your team. "Think about each character's strengths before you choose your partner as different combinations will lead to different strategies. Use the directional controls to move your active fighter around the ring. Punch and Kick attacks strike the opponent, and combine with Special Moves for stronger attacks. Learn the special commands for the characters you have chosen. Every fighter has a unique set of moves so practicing them is key to improving your performance. In every fight, take care of your health. When your active gets debuffed, switch to your partner when you can. Don't tag characters at random, the opponent can punish you for an unsafe tag. Try to switch when you have created enough distance, or when the opponent is recovering from an attack. Use throws when opponents stay close and block often. Mix throws, regular attacks and special moves to make your offensive game less predictable. Use devastating team attacks in key moments. A well-timed combination attack can cause some serious damage and possibly change the outcome of a match. Study opponent patterns and learn when they usually attack, block, or counter. This will help you find opportunities for your own combos. The further you get in arcade mode the harder the enemies get. Practice movement, blocking, tagging and special attacks to increase your chances of making it to the final battles.
