WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 doesn’t have a single story running through the game. It includes a variety of modes for players to experience different WWE-style narratives and create their own stories. The Road to WrestleMania mode offers you a structured story experience based on the WWE superstars you choose. Players can follow their favourite wrestler through rivalries, matches, backstage events and key WWE moments on their journey to WrestleMania. One of the biggest additions to the game is Story Designer, which lets players build their own wrestling storylines. Create rivalries, matches, dialogue sequences, characters, and events to create your own WWE-style scenario. So every player can have a different story line experience. Unlike a single campaign, the game provides players with the tools to create their own wrestling universe and dictate the course of rivalries and matches. The fact that you have the ECW brand also adds another important aspect of the presentation to the game. Players can use ECW-themed superstars and use them in different matches and custom wrestling situations.

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 is a game of wrestling matches featuring WWE superstars and invented characters. The game allows players to pick wrestlers from various brands and compete in different types of matches. Gameplay combines grappling, striking, reversals, throws, submissions, signature moves and finishing moves. Timing is everything because when you can counter an opponent’s attack, it can turn the momentum of a match completely. Players can target specific body parts to weaken them, pull off their signature moves, build up momentum and finally unleash their finisher. Depending on the type of match players can also use environmental elements and interact with objects around the ring. One of the big themes in the 2010 edition is customisation. Players can create unique wrestlers, customise their look, develop entrances and create finishing moves. They improved the Create-a-Finisher system to allow aerial moves, giving more freedom in creating signature moves. Also, the game offers Superstar Threads for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, which allows for even more customisation of attire. Players can further customise created characters through the creation system and Paint Tool. The roster includes WWE superstars and divas from the Raw, SmackDown and ECW brands, legends and other classifications. The console versions feature a much larger roster than the Nintendo DS version.

Play the game and select a wrestler from the roster or create your own superstar. Select your wrestler then pick your match type and step into the ring. Use the movement controls during a match to move your wrestler around the ring. The controller buttons can be used for attacks, grapples, reversals and other actions. Successful attacks gain momentum. Defensive timing can be used to turn the opponent’s moves against him. Grasp your opponent and weaken them with various attacks. As the match goes on build up enough momentum for signature moves and eventually your finisher. Different match types are for different purposes. In a standard singles match, the objective is usually to get a pinfall or make the other wrestler submit. Other match types may have additional rules, such as escaping a cage, climbing a ladder, eliminating opponents, or achieving a certain match objective. Or players can select to enter Road to WrestleMania for a more structured experience. Pick a superstar that is open and advance through the storyline by winning matches and events. For those who like to customise, the creation menus give you the tools to create a new superstar, entrance, moveset, attire and finishing move. Then you use the Story Designer to make original wrestling storylines and match scenarios. Multiplayer modes are also available, where players can compete against friends in supported local matches.
