Soulcalibur narrates the story of the legendary cursed sword Soul Edge and the sacred weapon Soul Calibur. Soul Edge is a powerful weapon that can corrupt those who desire its power. Warriors from all corners of the world are connected to the sword and its enigmatic powers. Mitsurugi is the main character of the story, a skilled Japanese swordsman, always in search of more powerful weapons and opponents. Another important character is Siegfried, a mighty warrior whose link to Soul Edge becomes central to the story of the game. Each fighter, including Sophitia, Taki, Kilik, Voldo, Maxi, Cervantes, Nightmare, Ivy, and others, has a reason to get involved in the conflict. Some warriors want to destroy Soul Edge, others want to harness its power for themselves. The legendary swords are at the heart of a worldwide fight involving warriors with different motives. Siegfried eventually becomes very attached to the cursed sword and transforms into Nightmare, one of the most recognisable characters in the game. The warriors travel through different lands, looking for the legendary weapons and fighting off anyone who stands in their way. They all have their own story arc providing the insight in their motivation and personal goals. As players move through the game’s many different modes, they’ll face a variety of warriors and learn more about the struggle over Soul Edge and Soul Calibur. The struggle culminates in powerful confrontations between the warriors and the forces linked to the cursed sword. The story is told through character introductions, endings, battles and cinematic sequences, not just one linear campaign.

Soulcalibur is a 3D weapon based fighting game. Players select a character and battle an opponent in a closed 3D arena. Each fighter has their own weapon leading to each character having different fighting style. Players can perform horizontal attacks, vertical attacks, kicks, guards, throws, counters and special combinations. The 3D movement system allows players to move around their opponent and dodge attacks. The ring’s positioning is important as players can be eliminated from the arena by ring-outs. Players can also use powerful attacks and combos to whittle down the health of their opponent. The game features a number of single player modes as well as two player versus gameplay. The Dreamcast version has additional content and improved presentation over the original arcade version.

Choose a fighter, and start the game. Pick a game mode and enter the arena. Move your character using the direction controls. Use horizontal and vertical attacks to hurt your opponent. Create more combinations with kicks. Watch out for incoming attacks. Move around your opponent so you don't get attacked and so you get better attack positions. Stay close to your opponent and use throws. Mix and match attacks to unleash devastating combos. Watch your opponent’s moves and look for opportunities to counter-attack. Don’t get too close to the edge of the arena. Ring-Out Knock your opponent out of the ring for a ring-out. - Standard Knockout: Reduce your opponent’s health to zero to win. Learn the weapons, attacks and combos of various characters.
