Blade is a 2D side-scrolling action beat-'em-up for Game Boy Color, inspired by the 1998 Marvel film. The movie is about Blade, the Daywalker and vampire hunter, and his investigation into a new, unknown clan of vampires called the New Blood. The Game Boy Color version has a different storyline, not just a retelling of the movie. Abraham Whistler, his mentor and friend, stands behind Blade as he examines the growing danger of vampires. The story kicks off when Blade finds out that a dangerous vampire group is stirring. These vampires are part of a larger plot, and Blade has to hopscotch from place to place, fighting his way through. As the story progresses it becomes apparent that the threat of the vampires is more serious than a mere group of undead criminals. Blade must continue pressing forward, facing ever more powerful enemies and major boss encounters. Whistler is a major supporting character in the story, helping Blade in his investigation. The game is not a straight retelling of every scene from the 1998 movie, but rather an adventure taking place in the Blade universe. The final stages take Blade into deadly vampire enemies and the larger threat beyond the New Blood clan. Blade’s combat skills, weapons and experience as a vampire hunter, are critical to surviving the trip.

It’s a single-player game with a mix of classic brawler stages, shooting gallery stages, and boss battles. The stages are mostly like a classic arcade beat-'em-up. Blade walks through an area, enemies coming at him from all sides. Players need to kill enemies to progress through the level. The battle is fought with close attacks, guard moves and special techniques. Blade's combat system is based on combinations of directions and buttons to perform the various attacks. You can use normal attacks or go for stronger ones like uppercuts and spin kicks. Blocking is also important because enemies can attack Blade at close range. The game also features a glave throwing blade, which gives Blade a powerful ranged attack. But its uses are limited so players need to decide when its worth using. This gives players incentive to save special attacks for tougher enemies or difficult sections. There’s another style of gameplay in shooting-gallery sections. Blade doesn’t just move through a side-scrolling area, but stays in the center while enemies come from all directions and distances. Use blade's glave when you want a stronger ranged attack. Don’t waste it on weak enemies as you have a limited number of uses. Save it for tough opponents, or when attacking from range is safer. A different approach is necessary for shooting-gallery sections. Blade remains in place while enemies emerge around him. Target the targeting cursor at enemies and shoot them before they reach Blade. Watch out for enemies coming from all edges of the screen. When dealing with boss fights, learn the attack pattern of the enemy. Use Blade's sword attacks, but don't waste health. Boss encounters are more concentrated than in normal stages, so patience and timing are important. Also keep an eye on the serum timer. Quickly achieve objectives and don’t waste time fighting enemies that can be safely avoided. Explore the different stages, fight increasingly powerful enemies, uncover secret passages and finally face the major vampire threat that Blade is investigating.
