When a mansion owned by the scientist Dr. Roy Curien is the epicentre of a terrible biological disaster, it all begins. Dr. Curien is a brilliant but unbalanced scientist who has been experimenting with the creation and resurrection of living organisms. His experiments result in a host of undead creatures. When things get out of control, government agents Thomas Rogan and G are sent to investigate. The agents enter the dangerous area and find that the mansion has been filled with zombies and mutated creatures. Their goal is to make their way through the infected facility, rescue surviving scientists, find out what happened and stop Dr. Curien before the outbreak spreads. As the agents advance they meet more and more dangerous beasts. There are several big boss fights in the game that need quick reflexes and accurate shooting. This tale eventually leads to Dr. Curien's most powerful creations and the final confrontation. The narrative is given by short cinematic sequences between the stages. Some of the arcade shooter’s progress can be changed based on the player’s performance and certain actions, giving it some replay value.

The House of the Dead is a first person light gun shooter. Players do not freely control a character through the environment . Instead the game moves the player through the levels and the player aims and shoots at enemies. The goal is simple, survive the trip and kill the undead creatures that appear on the screen. Players have to aim at zombies, mutants and other enemies fast before they arrive at the player. Accuracy is important because ammunition and reload timing can make a difference in survival. The game has a reload mechanic where players must reload their weapon after a certain number of shots. Environmental objects can be targeted, too. Sometimes shooting certain objects will reveal valuable objects or influence the path through the game. Branching progression is one of the big features of the game. Certain actions can alter the route through parts of the game taken by the player. Players can also rescue scientists scattered throughout the stages. Saving them contributes to the overall performance of the player and can provide benefits. Boss fights are especially important. Each boss has their own attack patterns and weak spots. Players will have to find these weaknesses and avoid attacks. The Saturn version is for one or two players and allows two people to work together cooperatively.

Start the game and select the number of players. Choose Thomas Rogan or G depending on which of the characters is free. When the level begins, the game will automatically walk your character through the environment. Point your weapon at the zombies and other enemies coming at you. Quickly shoot enemies before they get close enough to attack. Re-load your gun as necessary. This is usually done either by aiming away from the screen with a light gun, or by using the proper reload control. Keep an eye out for scientists who need to be rescued. Shoot enemies that might threaten them. Protect them whenever you can. Note the environment, some objects can be destroyed or interacted with by shooting them. During boss battles, find the weak points of the boss and aim your shots there. Multiple enemies are approaching. Don't waste ammo on unnecessary targets. If you are playing with two players, coordinate your attacks so that both players can cover different sections of the screen. Go through each chapter until you get to the last encounters.
