The story occurs in 2036, one year after the events of Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow. Soma Cruz has discovered his link to Dracula and has been able to live a somewhat normal life. But a bizarre cult is determined to resurrect Dracula. When the cult attempts to use his powers for their ends, Soma intervenes. He makes his way to a bizarre castle in the style of Dracula’s Castle, fighting his way thru rooms of monsters, traps and supernatural enemies. On the way, Soma meets old allies and new characters that help him to understand the cult's plans. He must explore the castle, defeat powerful enemies, collect their souls and prevent the resurrection of Dracula. The story follows Soma as he battles with his own supernatural powers, confronts the return of Dracula and attempts to save his friends and the world.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow is a side scrolling action adventure role-playing game. Players move thru a large interconnected castle as opposed to completely separate levels. Soma can run, jump, attack enemies, climb thru different areas and discover hidden rooms. As the player explores he acquires new abilities . This opens up new areas that were previously inaccessible . The combat is fast-paced and requires the players to learn the patterns of enemy attacks. In addition to being able to wield weapons such as swords and other equipment, Soma also has the added benefit of magical powers gained from the souls of enemies. Enemies you kill could drop souls that grant Soma new offensive, defensive or movement abilities. This allows for a lot of customisation, as players can switch out their abilities depending on what enemies they face.

Start by exploring the castle and defeating enemies in each area. Use your weapons and abilities to clear rooms and search for hidden paths. Collect enemy souls whenever possible because they can provide useful abilities. Equip different souls depending on the situation and experiment with combinations to discover effective strategies. As you progress, you will find stronger equipment and gain access to new abilities. These abilities can allow Soma to reach previously inaccessible areas. Pay attention to the map and revisit older locations when you obtain new abilities. Many hidden rooms and items can only be reached after gaining specific powers. During boss battles, study the enemy's attack patterns and avoid taking unnecessary damage. Some bosses require the use of the Nintendo DS touchscreen to complete a magical seal after their health has been reduced.
