The story follows a made fighter who gets involved with the criminal and underground fighting scene of New York City. You start off as a nobody street fighter and get slowly pulled into D-Mob's crew. As the player wins fights and earns respect, they become more and more important to the organization. But D-Mob's grip on the underground fighting scene is being challenged by rival groups. The player is caught between two rival crews and must fight to defend their friends while building up their reputation. The story introduces the player to many famous Def Jam artists and personalities. Some are made into foes, others can be made into allies depending on the progress of the player. The campaign features a variety of locations throughout New York City, including streets, clubs, warehouses, subway areas and other underground fighting venues. As the player progresses there are tougher opponents. Victories help the player gain respect and open up new opportunities. Your ultimate goal is to work your way up through the underground fighting scene and help D-Mob keep control, while beating back the rival forces threatening his organization. There’s fighting, character relationships, rivalries, customisation and more, so it’s not your normal arcade fighter.

Def Jam: Fight for NY has a 3D fighting system that uses several different types of fighting. Players may specialise in Street Fighting, Martial Arts, Wrestling, Kickboxing and Submission techniques. The story continues with the ability for the player-created character to develop different fighting styles. The style blending lets players create a fighter that fits their desired style. Fighting happens in interactive environments. Fighters can use objects and elements of the environment during battle, leading to more dynamic arenas than traditional fighting-game stages. Players can punch, kick, grab, throw, counter and do special moves and powerful attacks. Grappling is especially important because players can slam their opponents into walls, objects, vehicles and other environmental elements. There’s also a system in the game called Blazin’ Mode. As the player builds momentum in combat they can trigger special moves that are strong enough to do serious damage. Weapons can also show up in some fights. Players can use items such as bats, pipes, and other environmental weapons. In story mode, players are able to change the appearance of their fighter and develop his abilities. Win fights to earn respect and to work toward unlocking more content. There are also several multiplayer modes in the game. Depending on the mode and platform, the console versions support up to four local players.

Start the game and create your own fighter or choose an available character. Customise your character’s appearance, clothing, fighting style and more. Enter the story mode and start fighting enemies in New York City’s underground fight scene. Attack your opponent with basic punches and kicks. Create effective combinations by combining attacks. The grapple button allows you to grab your opponent and do throws, slams and other wrestling moves. Keep an eye on what your opponent is doing and counter when they attack. Move around the arena and use the environmental objects. You can smash opponents into walls and other objects for bonus damage. Build up momentum in combat. When your special meter is ready, activate Blazin’ Mode and perform your character’s powerful special move. Each style of fighting works differently, so try Street Fighting, Martial Arts, Wrestling, Kickboxing & Submission techniques. You have to win fights to gain respect and unlock new content to push the story forward. You can also choose to play multiplayer matches against your friends, selecting different fighters, arenas and fighting styles.
