Power Stone's story is about a group of fighters who are looking for the legendary Power Stones, mysterious magic gems said to hold great power. The fighters all have their own reasons for competing. Some are driven by money, fame, revenge, adventure or the need to fulfilll a personal dream. The fighters traverse diverse locations, battling each other in their quest for the powerful stones. Young adventurer and fighter Edward Falcon is the main protagonist. He gets involved in the search for the legendary Power Stones. He comes up against a number of other competitors who have ambitions of their own. During the course of the adventure the fighters discover that the Power Stones are no ordinary gems. Their combined energy can dramatically boost a fighter's power. Collect three stones and a character can evolve to gain powerful abilities. The story is not told through a lengthy cinematic campaign, but instead through character introductions, endings, arcade progression and short sequences. Each character has a distinct personality and motivation, increasing the replay value of the arcade mode. The adventure ultimately leads the fighters toward harder and harder opponents and battles. Players have to outwit their rivals using their own unique powers, weapons, items and Power Stone transformations of their character. The story structure encourages players to play through the game multiple times with different characters, as each fighter provides a different perspective and ending.

Power Stone's gameplay is a fusion of traditional fighting mechanics, free movement and interactive environments. They can roam around the whole arena rather than just stand across from an opponent. Characters can run, jump, attack, grab items, throw weapons and use the environment to their advantage. Weapons are of special importance. Players can find various objects around the stage and use them against opponents. Weapons can change the flow of a battle dramatically, depending on the circumstances. The arenas are interactive themselves. Players can move around from place to place, and can use objects or parts of the environment to attack opponents or get out of dangerous situations. The Power Stone system is the core mechanic. Power Stones appear in battles and collecting them gradually gets the fighter closer to transforming. Once a character has gathered three Power Stones, they can change into a more powerful form. While in this state, the fighter can perform devastatingly powerful special attacks known as Power Fusion techniques. The game therefore has several combined objectives. Players have to attack the opponents but look for Power Stones and handy weapons. The match can become very chaotic as both fighters may be trying to grab the same stone or weapon. “You want to react quickly and move well to survive these situations.” The Dreamcast version keeps the arcade-style, fast action with the convenience of home-console play.

Load up Power Stone, then choose any available fighter from the character selection screen. You choose a character and enter the battle arena. Use the directional controls to move about freely in the environment. Attack your opponent with normal attacks and special techniques. Jump around the arena to dodge incoming attacks and reposition yourself. Check the environment for weapons and useful items. Whenever possible pick up available items and use them against your opponent. Power Stones will appear during fights. Whenever it’s safe to do so, collect them. Gathering three stones triggers the power-up transformation of your character. Transform and use your enhanced powers and Power Fusion attacks to inflict massive damage. Be aware of your adversary's position and stay mobile. Movement is an important part of the combat system, as the arenas are fully interactive. Know what each character’s strengths and weaknesses are. Some fighters are meant for close-range attacks, some can take advantage of particular weapons or abilities. Play against a friend locally in two-player mode and experiment with a variety of characters, weapons and arena tactics.
