Master League is the most story-driven experience, where players can manage a football club and lead it through multiple seasons. You can build up your squad, sign players, manage tactics, play in competitions and try building a successful club. In Master League, winning matches alone is not enough. Players need to consider squad depth, player development, transfers, tactics and long-term performance. Another major mode is Become a Legend, where the player takes control of a single footballer, rather than an entire team. You start as an upcoming player and try to make a name for yourself as a pro football star. Your performances can affect your career direction. "Good performances may result in greater opportunities, and bad performances can make it more difficult to force your way into the first team. The whole thing is therefore a personal football journey rather than a fixed narrative. Players can pick their own teams, tactics, competitions and career goals.

PES 2014 is basically a football sim game. Matches are played with realistic football rules, with players controlling passes, shots, tackles, dribbles, crosses, through balls and defensive moves. There’s a lot of focus on passing and positioning in the game. Players can move the ball around the pitch to make space and try to break through defensive formations.
