Super Mario Strikers does not feature a traditional story campaign. The focus is primarily on competitive football. Players select a captain and build a team of support characters. The idea is to beat other teams, to score goals and to win tournaments. As players progress thru the competition, opponents become tougher. When they win matches, they get to show off their skills and be the top Strikers champion.

Super Mario Strikers is a five-player-per-team game with one captain and four support players. Fast and aggressive matches, players can take down their opponents and use special moves. Players can pass the ball to teammates, shoot at the goal, steal possession and make powerful tackles. The matches are very physical and there are few restrictions on contact unlike traditional football games .Captains possess special offensive skills that can turn the tide of a match. Players must know when to attack, defend, pass and use special moves. The game also has aspects that can be used to block opponents and create scoring opportunities.

Choose a captain and choose your team mates before you start a match. Move around the field and approach the ball using the Control Stick. Assist teammates by passing the ball to create scoring opportunities If you are close to the opponent's goal, charge your shot and aim for an open part of the goal. Use tackles to win the ball from your opponents. It's important to be positioned defensively, because too much space will just hand the opponent an easy goal. Don’t immediately use what is available in a strategic manner. Some items are useful for attacking, defending or disrupting the opponent. Monitor the match score and get aggressive when it’s time to catch up.
