Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. While not a traditional cinematic storyline, the game's Career Mode has a clear progression system, in which players take a professional skateboarder through different skateboarding locations and complete a series of objectives. You select a skater and then begin to work through a series of courses completing goals, collecting items, pulling tricks and earning cash. The ultimate goal is to move forward in the skating career and show that the selected rider has the capacity to become a professional skating champion. Unlike the PlayStation version, the Game Boy Colour version is based on a simpler, portable experience. Each skater will go through the courses available alone, and upon the successful completion of objectives, they will receive cash that can be spent on better skateboards and unlocking new levels. As you complete required objectives through the career, you also unlock photos and other content. There are no traditional story campaigns with cut scenes and dialogue . This is where the progression system adds a sense of achievement to the game . There are 7 main skate locations in Career Mode: Skate Street, NY City, The Hangar, School, The Bullring, Venice Beach and Skate Heaven. Each location has a layout that the players must learn and objectives that must be completed within the time available. As the player completes more goals, their career progresses and more areas open up. This gives the game a compact portable Tony Hawk feel, but still gives players a reason to improve their skating.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 is an arcade-style skateboarding game that captures the core ideas of the console games on Nintendo's handheld hardware. The game instead is presented in a side view or angled 3/4 view, rather than full 3D environments seen on PlayStation. Players guide a professional skater through various courses, performing tricks, collecting objects, completing objectives and trying to get a high score. Skating is about movement, about jumping, tricks, grinding and putting moves together into bigger scores. The D-Pad controls the skater’s movement and direction. The A Button is used to perform an ollie. This can be combined with directions to perform various aerial tricks. The B Button is used as the brake, and can be combined with directions for grinding moves as well. It is important for players to time their tricks correctly, because if a trick is not completed before the player lands, the skater will fall and points for the combo will be lost. The main method of advancement is Career Mode. Players pick a pro skater and take them through different locations while reaching goals. Completing objectives rewards the player with cash that can be spent at the skate shop to buy different boards and to unlock further levels. This enables every skater to be worked through the career content on offer, encouraging players to play around with different pro riders. Free Skate is a more relaxed experience. Players are free to practise tricks and roam an open course without the restrictions of the standard time limit. It’s great for learning map layouts, finding collectibles and just getting a feel for the controls before Career Mode.

Start the game and use the Control Pad to move through the main menu. To progress through the game's objectives, select Career Mode or to practise and explore available courses, select Free Skate. In Career Mode, pick a pro skater, and choose a skateboard and course that are available. At the start of the run, use the D-Pad to move left and right through the level. Some areas can also move vertically. Press A to do an ollie, and use A plus various directions while in the air to do tricks. During aerial sequences you can also use A to rotate your skater and make your run harder. B Button can be used to slow down or stop. If the skater is placed correctly near rails and other grindable objects, directional combos with B will allow him to perform different grind and slide techniques. Connect tricks together and land safely to build a higher score. Pay attention to the objective list and the time you have during Career Mode. Complete as many objectives as you can before the run is over. Some objectives require the player to collect objects, perform certain tricks, reach certain scores, or interact with specific parts of the environment. Completing goals earns money, and helps unlock additional boards and levels. Use Free Skate when you want to practise without worrying about the timer. This mode enables you to go to all unlocked locations without worrying about the time limit. The game does not have a save battery, but uses a password system of progress, so if you have the correct password you can continue your progress through the game.
