The game stars Little Mac, a young up-and-coming boxer from the Bronx who joins the World Video Boxing Association with aspirations of becoming the champ. Under the guidance of his trainer, Doc Louis, Little Mac begins his professional boxing career. Little Mac is small for many of his opponents but he is fast, determined and a good boxer. Early in his career, Little Mac fights opponents who have less experience. With every win, he climbs the boxing rankings, moving one step closer to his ultimate goal. Little Mac gets tougher and more powerful as he progresses, as do his enemies. Many of them have strange personalities, special techniques, and identifiable weaknesses. Little Mac must study each opponent carefully, he must. Not only does he have to keep punching away, but look out for their movements, and when they are vulnerable. Some opponents use strong punches, others use speed, tricks or strange movements. Little Mac’s smaller size can actually work in his favour, as it allows him to move quickly and dodge attacks. Throughout Little Mac's career, Doc Louis offers encouragement and advice. Under his guidance, Little Mac learns the importance of timing, defence, and patience. As Little Mac continues to win matches, he progresses through several boxing circuits, facing increasingly well-known opponents. Every fight is a test of Little Mac’s pattern-recognition skills. Adversaries invariably have some tell that indicates when they're about to strike. If Little Mac dodges at the right time, he can counterattack and sometimes land a powerful star. Stars can be used to throw stronger punches that can stun opponents temporarily. Little Mac goes on to fight some of the best boxers in the association. These fighters need much more precise timing and knowledge of their attack patterns. The goal is to win the championship by beating the best, and to prove Little Mac can hold his own as a pro boxer. The game’s story is mostly told through its boxing progression rather than a traditional cinematic campaign. Little Mac’s victories are another rung up the career ladder, as he works his way to championship glory.

Punch-Out!! is a timing-based boxing game where you have to dodge, block and counter. Players battle opponents inside the boxing ring as Little Mac from a third person perspective. The player can throw different types of punches including left and right punches. Players can dodge attacks and block incoming punches too. Learning opponent patterns is the most important part of the game. Each boxer is unique and players need to find visual cues before reacting. Successful dodges may offer opportunities for counter attacks. Well-timed attack on an opponent can do a lot of damage. Stars can also be earned by countering opponents successfully. Stars make Little Mac punch hard. Each fight has a time limit and may end in knockout, technical knockout, decision or defeat depending on the circumstances. You also have to take care of Little Mac’s stamina. If he is repeatedly attacked and at the wrong time he may be exposed to attack. The game has lots of circuits and plenty of different opponents. The deeper players go, the faster, stronger, and more chaotic their opponents are.

Start the game and control Little Mac. Get into the boxing ring and study your opponent carefully. Attack with left and right punch controls. Observe the opponent’s movements to recognise incoming attacks. Don't attack all the time, instead dodge or block punches. Look for times when the enemy is vulnerable. Counterattack right after successfully dodging an attack. Try to earn stars by getting your punches in at the right time. When the opponent is vulnerable, use the powerful star punch. Watch your health and stamina through the fight. Be careful not to take unnecessary damage as stronger opponents can take Little Mac out very quickly. Study each boxer’s particular attack patterns. Win fights and move up the boxing circuits. Keep beating up the opponents until Little Mac reaches the championship fights.
