Raid 2020 is a story in a futuristic world where drug crime has become a major menace. Pit Bull, a drug lord, now controls a powerful crime syndicate and has taken over much of the operations and communications. The authorities decide they need a seasoned operative to infiltrate the organization's territory and destroy its operations. The player assumes the role of Shadow, an elite narcotics officer chosen for the mission. Shadow must traverse dangerous terrain controlled by Pit Bull and kill the threats guarding the criminal enterprise. His mission takes him through different environments, each with different enemies, dangers and challenges. Shadow’s journey starts in places like the Pier and continues through the Swamp and Technopolis. The more he moves forward the more futuristic the environment becomes, until he reaches Space, and the Computer Station. Each location brings Pit Bull’s headquarters one step closer. The ultimate aim is to arrive at Pitbull’s Lair and face the crime boss. Shadow has to survive the trip, defeat the enemies guarding Pit Bull and complete the mission. The story-line is pretty simple compared to modern story-driven games. Much of the story is there to set the player’s goal and provide background for the different stages. The emphasis is still on action and gameplay, not on dialogue or cinematic storytelling.

Raid 2020 is an action, shooting game, primarily side scrolling. Shadow is controlled from a side-view perspective, and players move through different environments. The main goal is to survive each level, defeat enemies, avoid hazards, collect useful items and proceed to the next area. One of the core gameplay elements is fighting. Shadow is equipped with weapons that let him attack hostile enemies. Players will have to be aware of the location of the enemies and have quick reflexes to incoming threats. Shooting at the right time prevents enemies from getting close, and careless movement leads to unnecessary damage. The environments themselves are dangerous too. Even when there are no enemies, Shadow can be hurt by mines, lasers, obstacles, and other dangers. Players need to be mindful of both combat and platforming elements. Different environments, different challenges for each phase. The Pier is an early location, while the Swamp shifts the mood and introduces new environmental obstacles. Technopolis has a more futuristic theme and Space offers a unique section that changes the gameplay experience. The game also features vehicle-based gameplay. Sequences on boats and in space provide variety and require players to adapt to different movement situations. These parts help prevent the entire game from becoming a repetitive side-scrolling shooting experience. Progression is very much based on player skill and knowledge of the levels. Raid 2020 is an older NES game, so players may need to run through sections a few times to learn enemy locations, obstacle patterns and safer routes.

Launch the game and control Shadow. The directional controls can be used to move around the present environment, and the action buttons are used to attack enemies. Take your time with each stage, and be on the lookout for enemies coming from all directions. Use Shadow’s weapon to eliminate threats before they can do damage. Environmental hazards can appear without warning, so do not rush through unfamiliar areas. Scavenge for useful items and equipment. Collecting resources you come across along the way can help Shadow make it through tough areas and improve your chances of beating a stage. Carefully time your movement when approaching obstacles such as mines or lasers. In some areas, players must learn the pattern of hazards so they can get through safely. In vehicle sections you get used to the various controls and movement mechanics. The boat and space sections are different from the standard walking and shooting sections. Learn from your mistake. When you die as Shadow, take note of where enemies and hazards spawned, and use that information next time. The goal is to move through the many main areas, survive the increasingly difficult battles, and finally reach Pitbull’s Lair for the final confrontation.
