The events of Alien vs. Predator take place near a Colonial Marine training base called Golgotha. Developed as a training environment for Colonial Marines, the situation becomes catastrophic when an Alien-infested ship arrives and Xenomorphs begin spreading throughout the complex. Meanwhile, a Predator ship docks nearby, providing the Predators a chance to hunt the Aliens for valuable trophies.
The whole thing is a simulation based on the events of the training base. The player can experience this situation from three different perspectives and each character has a totally different objective.
Colonial Marines Plot
The Colonial Marine campaign follows Private Lance J. Lewis who is trapped inside the facility after the outbreak. The base is crawling with Xenomorphs and Predators and most of the other Marines have already been killed.
Lewis is starting from a position of vulnerability, with neither the equipment nor the security clearance to move freely around the complex. His mission is to survive, explore the facility, collect weapons and security cards, activate the self-destruct system of the base and reach an escape pod before the facility is destroyed.
The most classic first person shooter experience is Marine campaign. Players have to search rooms, find access cards, use computer terminals, pick up weapons and ammo, and navigate through elevators and air ducts.
The environment itself becomes a significant part of the story. Players can learn what happened to the personnel at the facility by interacting with computer terminals and slowly learning the events leading to the outbreak.
Lewis has to get a top-secret security pass eventually, and make his way to the command center. Once the self-destruct sequence is initiated, your mission is to get out of the facility alive.
Alien Tales
The Alien campaign offers a completely different perspective. Instead of trying to escape the threat of the Xenomorph, the player becomes the threat.
The Alien’s primary objective is to find and save the Alien Queen who has been captured and is being held aboard the Predator ship. The Alien must make its way through the complex using the ventilation systems to get from one area to another.
The Alien does not rely on guns like the Marine does. It fights enemies with its claws, bite and powerful tail. The Alien is very fast and deadly up close, but much more vulnerable to ranged attacks.
The Alien also has the unique ability to create more life by cocooning the Marines. This mechanic introduces a survival system to the Alien campaign, absent in the other two campaigns.
Unlike the Marine or Predator, the Alien cannot use elevators, making the ventilation shafts an important way to navigate levels of the facility.
Story of Predator
Predator is about honor and hunting. The Predator comes to the facility to hunt down powerful enemies and ultimately take the skull of the Alien Queen as a trophy.
The Predator starts with its wrist blades and some tech abilities. It can activate its camouflage system to become invisible and use a variety of visual filters to detect targets and navigate the environment.
But the Predator's invisibility isn't just a freebie. Honor points are the heart of the campaign. Killing enemies while invisible can negatively affect the Predator’s honor and prevent you from accessing some of its more powerful weapons.
As the Predator earns enough honor in combat he gains more weapons such as the Combi-Stick, Smart Disk and shoulder-mounted cannon.
The three campaigns are thus different facets of the same conflict. The Marine is trying to survive and escape, Alien is trying to protect its Queen and Predator is trying to claim the Queen as the ultimate trophy.
