Story

The story is set two years after the events of Contra III: The Alien Wars. After the defeat of Red Falcon, a new alien threat attacks humanity in the form of Black Viper. Soldiers Bill Rizer and Lance Bean are sent in to fight the invading forces, along with fellow warriors Mad Dog and Scorpion. Their mission is to stop the invasion and beat the enemies that are behind it. This story follows the familiar theme of elite soldiers battling overwhelming alien armies, with action taking place in dangerous environments filled with enemy troops, traps and powerful bosses.

Gameplay

Contra 4 features classic 2D run-and-gun gameplay. Players shoot enemies, jump over obstacles and collect weapon power-ups to enhance their attacks as they run through side-scrolling stages. The Nintendo DS features two screens that combine to provide a taller playing field for the game, and the grappling hook allows characters to grab railings and travel between the two screens. There are also tunnel stages where the perspective shifts so you have to shoot differently. Arcade Mode consists of nine stages and when you complete it, Challenge Mode becomes available with 40 additional tasks. Easy, Normal and Hard difficulty settings for different levels of challenge.
