Story

The story begins when Pocky is just minding her own business at her shrine. Suddenly, Rocky, one of the Nopino goblins, shows up with worrying news: his fellow goblins have turned violent and are attacking him. It seems to be similar to a previous disturbance that Pocky had helped to resolve, but the source of this new one remains unknown. Pocky says he'll help Rocky investigate. They travel through shrines and forests and graveyards and other dangerous places, and encounter supernatural creatures that seem to be under the influence of some unknown force. As they go further in their journey, they find out there is a bigger threat behind the goblins’ strange behaviour. The story is inspired by Japanese folklore and supernatural fantasy. The game tells its story through short introductions, character encounters and the progression of its stages, instead of relying on long cinematic sequences. The heart and soul of Pocky and Rocky’s adventure is the relationship between the two. Their differing looks and attack methods complement each other, while a shared goal serves as the basis for both solo and cooperative play.

Gameplay

Pocky & Rocky is a top-down scrolling shooter. Players make their way through stages shooting enemies in all directions. A camera that follows the characters through areas full of monsters, projectiles, environmental hazards, and tough boss battles. Pocky throws magical cards, attacking from a distance. Rocky throws magical leaves. Both characters can also defend themselves from close-range enemies with close range attack. This combination makes positioning important : players need to keep enough distance to shoot effectively, while being braced to counter threats that get too close. There’s also sliding, defensive plays, and bombs in the game. Players can slide to avoid attacks and get through dangerous areas . Bombs can hurt nearby enemies and give players an emergency option when the screen is crowded . The actual usefulness of each ability is situational and depends on the enemy. Power-ups can enhance projectile attacks and provide additional offensive options. As players advance through the ever challenging stages, they also have to manage their remaining health, lives and bombs. The game’s two player mode is one of its best features and can be played simultaneously. Supported gameplay lets a second player join in to allow Pocky and Rocky to fight together. While the game is still tough as enemies and projectiles can fill the screen in no time, working together can help ease the burden of tougher encounters.
