Contra: Legacy of War brings with it another major conflict against hostile alien forces. Once again, the world is on the brink of danger and heavily armed soldiers are sent to battle to stop the enemy before it’s too late. Players play as a Contra operative who goes on a mission through hostile environments. Throughout the mission, the soldier faces enemy troops, alien creatures, defensive installations, dangerous machines and powerful bosses. The story is told more through action of the game and progress through levels not through long cinematic sequences. Each stage places the player in a new dangerous environment with the goal of essentially surviving, defeating enemies and making it to the next part of the mission. The alien menace provides the science-fiction setting for the game. Players battle enemies that are as much a part of the series as its blend of military action and alien horror. Soldiers, creatures, weapons, explosions and big bosses come together to deliver that classic high-stakes Contra atmosphere. The challenges become more difficult as the player progresses. Fighting enemies demands quick reflexes and positioning, while boss fights demand that players learn attack patterns and exploit opportunities to deal damage. The story is ultimately a framework for the action. The main draw isn't a complicated story, but the experience of fighting your way through harder and harder environments and trying to complete the mission.

Contra: Legacy of War modifies the traditional Contra formula with a three-dimensional perspective. Players can walk around the environment and fight enemies from various angles, rather than being limited to a basic horizontal path. The core gameplay is still shooting-centric. Players must kill enemies, dodge attacks that come their way and environmental hazards. Movement is very important because if the player stands still then the player is vulnerable to enemy attacks. The game includes various weapons and power-ups which can improve the offensive skills of the player. Players can change weapons according to the circumstances, and use stronger attacks against groups of enemies or powerful bosses. Enemy encounters are varied and can include normal soldiers, alien creatures, machines, and larger enemies. Some enemies will try to attack from a distance, others will try to get right up in your face. Some of the most difficult moments in the game are boss battles. A boss will typically have an attack pattern that players can learn, so players have to dodge projectiles and wait for openings to attack. The 3D environments also alter the way players approach combat. Players need to be aware of their surroundings, and use movement to dodge enemy attacks. The experience is unlike the traditional 2D Contra games. The game can also be played with one other player. The multiplayer gameplay lets two players fight it out through the action, making for a classic co-op arcade experience.

Select the available game mode and character to begin the game. When you start the mission, wander around the environment, but be on the lookout for enemy attacks. Keep an eye on your character's health and avoid taking unnecessary damage. Enemy projectiles can come fast, so movement and positioning is key. Before you settle into a new area, look around. Some enemies may approach from strange angles or attack at a distance. Don’t just randomly attack in boss battles. Observe the boss's movements and learn its attack pattern. Dodge incoming attacks, and shoot when the boss is vulnerable. If you play multiplayer, communicate with the other player and try to cover different parts of the battlefield. Working together can help with tough enemy encounters. Continue on through each stage, kill the enemies and bosses and finish the mission.
