The story follows a police officer, John McClane, who is thrust into a dangerous hostage situation. A major building has been seized by criminals and hostages are being held inside. McClane battles his way through the building, killing the criminals and rescuing the hostages. The adventure unfolds through a series of action-packed areas filled with enemies, traps, weapons, and environmental hazards. The opposition gets tougher and tougher as McClane makes his way through the building. Enemies stop him with guns, melee weapons and other attacks. The story is told in a simple arcade style with emphasis on action and not much dialogue or complicated storytelling. He finally has to go head to head with the minds behind the hostage situation. The final encounters are the toughest challenges of the game, requiring players to use everything they’ve learned over the course of the adventure. The European release utilises the Die Hard license, and frames the game around John McClane, rather than the original Japanese character presentation.

Die Hard Arcade is a 3D beat 'em up designed for the arcade. Players take control of their character from a third-person view, walking around in a 3D environment fighting groups of enemies. Combat consists of punches, kicks, throws, grabs and special attacks. Players can chain attacks to quickly kill opponents. One of the most important features of the game is its interactive environment. Weapons and items can be picked up and used against enemies; In the course of the adventure players can find firearms, melee weapons and other useful items. Cinematic sequences and quick reaction-based actions also add a variation into the usual combat. Players must take care of their health as they make their way through each area. Defensive movement and quick attacks are important as too much damage can result in losing a life. Each enemy has a different attack pattern and strength. Some enemies can be taken down by simply attacking, while others need more careful timing. Boss battles are a huge part of the game. Bosses are stronger than regular enemies, and often require players to learn their attack patterns to be able to defeat them successfully. The arcade design encourages players to replay stages to improve their performance, learn enemy patterns, and complete the game with better scores.

In boss fights, watch the enemy’s attack pattern and attack at the right moment. Take care of your health and don’t hurt yourself for nothing. Replay the stages you've already done to learn the enemy placements and get better at the game in general.
