The story starts with a space marine on Mars. He has been sent to the planet as punishment for disobeying an order to fire on civilians. While stationed there, a military experiment using teleportation technology goes terribly awry. The experiments are about gateways connecting remote places but the technology inadvertently opens up portals to another dimension. The resulting invasion brings horrifying creatures into the military installations, killing personnel and turning the previously controlled environment into a nightmare. The player character is one of the remaining survivors of the military force. Communications have been cut off and the bases around him are overrun with monsters. The marine must fight his way through the facilities and find a way to survive. The campaign is split into episodes and levels. Each area contains corridors, rooms, locked areas, secret places, weapons, ammo, armour, health items and lots of enemies. So exploration is just as important as fighting. The environment gets more and more supernatural as the player progresses. What begins as a military science fiction setting slowly turns into a battle of the forces of Hell. The marine has an increasingly powerful arsenal. Starting with basic weapons, the player can get shotguns, chainguns, rocket launchers, plasma weapons and other equipment. Each weapon has a different strength and is useful against different enemies. The story is deliberately simple compared to later story-heavy games. Much of DOOM's atmosphere is created through environmental design, enemy encounters, level layouts, and the feeling of being trapped within an enemy-controlled facility. The main objective is simple. Survive, fight through the invasion, and destroy the demonic forces in the way of the marine.

DOOM is a first-person shooter where exploration and combat take centre stage. Players take the first-person perspective of the marine and navigate through maze-like levels while searching for weapons, ammunition, health, armour, keys and secret areas. The majority of the experience is combat. Enemies attack from different directions, so players need to keep on the move and react quickly. Too much inactivity can make the player a sitting duck. Different weapons are good for different things. The basic pistol is available early in the game, but more powerful weapons offer a lot more firepower. The shotgun is good for close and medium range, and the chaingun can quickly hurt enemies . Explosive weapons can do heavy damage but you have to be careful where you put them. Plasma-based weapons provide powerful strikes against tougher enemies, and are particularly handy when facing tough fights. Enemy types differ in speed, health, attacks, and behaviour. Some enemies attack from afar while others try to get close to the player. Stronger demons need more ammo and to move carefully. Level exploration is another big part of gameplay. Players are frequently presented with locked doors which need coloured keycards or skull keys. You'll often have to find the right key to unlock the next part of a level. Also, switches and secret passages can alter the layout of a map. Secret areas may contain valuable ammo, weapons, armour, health or other useful items. The game rewards the player who explores, not just goes for the exit. Knowing the map and remembering places you couldn’t get to before can help players find useful resources. According to GameFAQs , the GBA version allows for up to four local players, and its handheld version is notable for having multiplayer capability.

Start the game, Select the multiplayer or single player mode you prefer. In single player gameplay, you control the marine and start to explore the available level. Navigate corridors and rooms with the directional controls. Beware of attack from all sides, for enemies can attack from different directions. Gather weapons and ammunition when you can. Weapons are good for different situations so don't waste powerful ammo on weak enemies. If you're running low on ammo, use the pistol and save the bigger guns for bigger and scarier enemies. Shotguns are good for when you close in on enemies, and rapid-fire weapons are good against groups of enemies. Take care of your health and armour during each level. Taking unnecessary damage can make future encounters much harder. Don’t just follow the main path. Check side rooms and alternate routes. You’ll often find important weapons, ammo, armour, and health items tucked away from the main path. Look for locked doors and coloured keys. If you come to a door that doesn't open, keep looking until you find the right key or switch. Movement is very important. Don’t stand still and shoot, move around enemies and use the environment to your advantage to avoid attacks. In a multi-enemy situation, target the most dangerous enemies first. Strong ranged attackers and fast enemies can pose a serious threat if left unchecked. Explore until you find the exit to the level. Once you reach the exit, the game will save your progress and move you onto the next challenge.
