Double Dragon tells the story of Billy Lee and Jimmy Lee, two brothers who have been trained in martial arts. Their quiet life is destroyed when Billy's girlfriend Marian is kidnaped by the Black Warriors gang. The gang's leader takes Marian hostage and Billy must enter the dangerous territory of the organization and fight his way through the members. The 2 player version starts with Billy and Jimmy . The single player version starts with Billy . The brothers journey through city streets, industrial areas, forests, and occupied enemy sites, fighting increasingly tougher enemies. The Black Warriors send a lot of fighters to stop the brothers. Enemies range from ordinary street thugs to highly skilled martial artists and tough bosses. Each level brings new threats and the player has to improve his combat technique. Billy and Jimmy move on to tougher members of the organization. The brothers have to use their martial arts skills, objects in the environment and weapons found across the stages to survive. The final battle sees the brothers face off against the leader of the Black Warriors. The game leads up to this battle by slowly increasing the difficulty and introducing more dangerous enemies. The story line is simple compared to modern games, but it gives a clear motivation for the arcade action. Marian's kidnapping is the reason the player is given to go through each stage and kill the gang.

Double Dragon is a side-scrolling brawler, emphasizing close combat. Players can choose to control either Billy Lee or Jimmy Lee, and must fight through hordes of enemies as they make their way through horizontally scrolling levels. The combat system lets players throw punches, kicks, jumps and other martial arts moves. Players can chain attacks together, and use positioning to control enemy groups. One of the unique features of the game is its weapon system. Enemies will drop weapons that can be picked up and used by the players. These include bats, whips, knives and other items. Weapons can provide extra range and damage on top of normal attacks. Players need to be aware of enemy positioning. Enemies can come from all directions so it’s important to keep moving around the screen and not get caught. The game consists of several stages, featuring different environments and enemy encounters. As players progress, enemies will become tougher, and bosses will present new challenges. Double Dragon has a one or two player option, and the option for the two players to team up through the arcade campaign. Cooperative play introduces a fresh strategic element to the game, enabling players to target different enemies and assist one another through challenging segments. It is an arcade style progression game. Players have limited lives and need to learn enemy patterns, stage layout and boss attacks to make it to the end.

Launch the game and select one or two player mode. Play as Billy or Jimmy as you progress through each stage and fight the enemies that appear. You can move your character around the battlefield using the directional controls. Press the attack buttons to punch and kick. Combine movement and attacks to evade enemy attacks and inflict damage. When an enemy drops a weapon, run over and pick it up. Weapons can help with some battles and can be especially useful when dealing with groups of enemies. “Watch the enemy’s movements closely. Never fight more than one enemy at once. If you can, run around the screen and kill each enemy one at a time. Jumping attacks are useful when enemies are at different heights or if you want to avoid attacks. Timing is important, because enemies will attack quickly. As you go through the stages, you'll face stronger enemies. Observe their attack patterns, and use the environment and weapons at your disposal to your advantage. Patience is needed in boss battles. Just watch where the boss is moving, avoid being attacked and attack when you see an opening. Work with the other player in two-player mode. One player can distract an enemy while the other attacks, making difficult encounters easier to handle. The main goal is to get through all the stages, beat the Black Warriors, save Marian and finish the adventure.
