Scrooge McDuck is on a treasure hunting adventure around the world in the Ducktales story. Scrooge is already very wealthy, but he wants to be wealthier, and that desire drives him on to new fields of enterprise. He learns about five legendary treasures hidden in different locations around the world and decides to go for them himself. His journey takes him far beyond Duckburg, where he must traverse dangerous terrain populated by hostile creatures, traps, secret passages, and mighty guardians. And also after the legendary treasures is Scrooge’s greatest rival, Flintheart Glomgold. Glomgold wants to beat Scrooge and prove that he is the richest duck in the world. This adds a competitive element to the adventure, as Scrooge has to collect the treasures before his rival can win. So Scrooge embarks on a journey to several locations, seeking treasure and overcoming the obstacles that stand between him and the treasures. The adventure kicks off as Scrooge makes ready to investigate the first of many perilous places. Each area is a platforming challenge with a big treasure in it. Scrooge must go through underground places, forests, castles, icy environments and other unusual locations in search of the objective. Scrooge isn’t alone on his journey. Characters from the DuckTales universe help him in various situations, while his nephews and other familiar characters contribute to the game’s recognizable Disney atmosphere. But the main concern is still on Scrooge's treasure hunt and rivalry with Glomgold. Scrooge is confronted by enemies at each location, who try to prevent him from succeeding. Scrooge uses his cane to attack or bounce off obstacles, rather than using traditional weapons. His cane is an indispensable part of his journey, enabling him to overcome enemies and access otherwise unreachable areas. The five treasures are the main objectives of the adventure. Scrooge has to go through each area, beat its guardian or boss and get the treasure before he can continue to the final stages. The adventure becomes more and more difficult as players move through the various locations. Scrooge’s ultimate goal is not just to survive the journey, but to prove that he can get the fabled riches, and keep his status as the wealthiest duck on earth. The story mixes treasure hunting, competition, exploration, and the odd personality of the DuckTales television series.

Players control Scrooge McDuck, guiding him through a series of stages containing enemies, platforms, hazards, secret areas, valuables, and bosses. The Game Boy version keeps the original game's gameplay intact, but changes the level designs to accommodate the smaller screen of the handheld. Scrooge's cane is the main mechanic in the gameplay. Unlike most traditional platformers, where you just jump on enemies, Scrooge can use his cane in multiple ways. His cane can be used as a pogo stick to allow him to bounce continuously across the stage. He uses this technique to cross dangerous areas and get to higher platforms. Scrooge can also hit enemies with the cane. Timing is important , as different enemies have different movements . Players need to recognize enemy patterns and know when to attack them or move past them. The stages are focused on exploration. Players don’t simply run from the beginning of a level to the end. Boss fights occur at the end of large areas. Every boss is a different challenge and players need to know its movement and attack pattern. Players can walk into pits, enemies, moving objects, environmental obstacles, and other perils. Good platforming needs precise movement, and careful timing. The Game Boy version is especially noteworthy for the way it carries over the gameplay from the larger NES game to a portable format, while retaining the core mechanics. Useful rewards can also be found in secret rooms so don't always go the most obvious route. Each major stage has a treasure objective. Continue to explore until you find the right path for the treasure and the stage's main boss or guardian. Before entering the boss fight make sure you know the environment around you and have enough health to survive. During boss fights, pay attention to how the boss moves and attacks. Use Scrooge's cane at the right time, and stay out of the line of fire of incoming attacks. Patience is often better than attacking again and again without paying attention to the boss's moves. Kill the boss . Loot the treasure . Move to the next available location . The stages can be played as individual adventures, so you can try out different environments and challenges during the game. Keep practicing the cane movement of Scrooge since the mastery of the pogo technique is the key to reach hard to reach platforms and survive dangerous areas. With practice, players can move more efficiently, collect more treasure and finish stages with fewer mistakes.
