Duke Nukem for Game Boy Colour is a side-scrolling action platformer starring the larger-than-life character Duke Nukem. The GBC version is based on Duke Nukem II, but it is not a straight conversion of the PC game. Torus Games made a version perfect for the Game Boy Colour, with its own levels, enemies, weapons, items and situations. In this adventure, Duke is fighting the alien Zorgonites, who are behind a new threat that Duke must stop. The game preserves the basic attitude of the Duke Nukem series, but turns it into a compact handheld adventure. Duke is led through a number of dangerous locations filled with alien enemies, traps, environmental hazards, locked areas and obstacles. Instead of just moving from one end of a stage to another, players are often expected to explore the environment, find useful items, find routes through the level, and look for ways to get to the exit. There are some areas where Duke needs access cards or other interactions before it can proceed. The game also has a variety of scenarios with vehicles and special sections, making the adventure more than just a platforming game. According to current promotional material, the GBC version has 16 colourful levels . Other game databases detail the game in terms of wider range of stage content . The adventure is built around short handheld sessions, but still provides players with plenty of exploration and combat. Duke Nukem for Game Boy Colour is a mixture of 2D Platformer, Shooter and Exploration. Duke travels through side-scrolling stages fighting enemies, avoiding hazards, picking up useful items and looking for the right way forward. The game’s run-and-gun style is obvious but exploration is also important as some stages have locked passages, security-related obstacles, ladders, hidden areas and other elements that prevent the player from simply running straight to the end. The combat system is centred around the weapon Duke chooses. Players can pick up various weapons during the adventure and switch between them when necessary. A gun can be useful against normal enemies, but more powerful weapons can be useful against tougher enemies or groups of enemies. The GameFAQs description states a large arsenal, special powers, pick-ups and alien enemies. Also important is moving. Duke can run, jump, crouch, climb ladders and navigate areas that require precise positioning. A section may be blocked until the player searches for buttons, access points, cards or other objects. This adds a bit more depth to the levels than your basic left-to-right platformer. There are also vehicle sections in the game. Promotional material for the GBC version mentions Duke driving a tank and flying a rocket ship providing some variation on the normal platforming and shooting sections. The Game Boy Colour hardware has inherent limitations on the visual scale compared to the bigger Duke Nukem games, but Torus Games made the game work with the handheld's capabilities. The game has colourful 2D environments, scrolling stages, enemy animations, weapon effects and sound effects to bring a recognisable Duke Nukem experience to a portable system.

Whenever possible, gather useful items as they can increase your chances of getting through the tougher parts. There are also health-related items and special powerups, which can be especially helpful when you enter areas with many enemies. The game features a battery-backed save system built in, allowing players to save their progress instead of having to complete the entire adventure in one sitting. The current advertising material had emphasised the ability to save at any point.
