Ecco the Dolphin is a classic Sega Genesis action-adventure title that puts the player in control of Ecco, a young dolphin whose peaceful underwater world is suddenly destroyed by a mysterious storm. The storm creates a huge whirlpool, pulling Ecco’s pod away and leaving him alone in his home waters. Ecco survives the disaster and begins searching for his missing family, but what seems like a simple rescue mission slowly reveals itself to be a much larger mystery. Ecco dances through various underwater environments, talking to dolphins, whales, orcas, fish and other sea animals. His natural sonar lets him communicate, explore his surroundings, find secret passages and interact with mysterious glyphs. As Ecco moves forward he learns that the disappearance of his pod is tied into events involving ancient civilizations, time travel and a mighty alien force. The story later introduces the Atlanteans , a lost civilization with something to do with the mysteries beneath the ocean . Ecco must use an Atlantean time machine to journey to various time periods to discover the truth behind the strange events occurring in his world. Ecco also meets the mysterious Asterite, a powerful and ancient being who plays a key role in his quest. His quest leads him eventually to the Vortex, an alien race that threatens the destruction of marine life on Earth. The adventure begins with a search for a missing pod and grows into a struggle for the fate of the whole world. The game starts off as a pretty peaceful underwater adventure, but its story gets weirder and more sci-fi as you go. The mixture of realistic dolphin behavior, mysterious underwater environments, ancient mythology, and time-travel elements makes Ecco the Dolphin have a unique story compared to other Genesis games of the time.

Ecco the Dolphin is an action-adventure game with two-axis side-scrolling, exploration and puzzle-solving. Rather than moving through terrestrial stages, players control Ecco underwater, swimming through large aquatic environments with tunnels, caverns, open water, currents, obstacles and marine life. The Genesis version is for one player. Movement is focused on swimming, not walking. Many areas have diverging paths, hidden passages, underwater tunnels and puzzles. Players will often need to carefully explore an area before they find the right way forward.

Take over the underwater world as Ecco and start the game. Swim in the water with the directional controls, and explore the surrounding area. Movement is not based on a traditional platform game, but rather on a three dimensional-feeling underwater navigation, even if the game itself is presented in a 2D side-scrolling perspective. When you go deep underwater, always watch Ecco’s breath meter. As the air begins to run low, head back to the surface or find an underwater air pocket. At the deeper levels knowing where the safe breathing areas are becomes important. Use sonar with Ecco a lot. The sonar can communicate with the other dolphins and creatures of the sea, reveal information about the environment around you and activate special glyphs. There are certain areas that cannot be completed until the correct glyph is activated. Ecco can also swim at high speeds using his speed controls. He builds up enough momentum to charge forward in powerful bursts and to leap out of the water. These movements come in handy for dodging enemies, crossing obstacles, getting to higher areas, and attacking certain creatures. Food is important, too. Ecco can eat smaller fish to regain health, while special creatures and objects can provide additional help. Avoid dangerous predators if possible, as unnecessary damage can make later sections harder. Explore carefully instead of just rushing forward. There are many levels with secret paths, underwater caves, blocked paths and puzzles. If you come to a barrier, use sonar, talk to other creatures around you and look for another way around it. The story introduces new abilities and mysteries as it progresses. Solve environmental puzzles and follow clues until Ecco reaches the later stages of his journey through time and space.
