The kingdom has been invaded by a powerful enemy called the evil Death Adder, who has stolen the legendary Golden Axe and captured the King and Princess. The player chooses one of three heroes to start the journey with: Axe Battler, Tyris Flare, or Gilius Thunderhead. There is a reason every warrior fights Death Adder. Axe Battler’s homeland of Tyris Flare is destroyed, Tyris Flare is out for revenge after losing her family, and Gilius Thunderhead is out for revenge after his brother is killed. The three warriors move through dangerous lands full of enemy soldiers, skeletons, giants and other fantasy creatures. On the way, you will meet magical creatures, on which you can ride and gain the upper hand in battle. These will help with clearing groups of enemies and make some sections easier. The heroes continue fighting their way through villages, forests, castles and other dangerous locations as they approach Death Adder's lair. The heroes finally catch up to Death Adder and fight him for the final time. Their mission is to vanquish him, claim back the Golden Axe, save the King and Princess and bring peace to the kingdom. Instead of a long cinematic campaign, the story is told via simple arcade-style progression, keeping the focus on combat and co-op action.

Golden Axe is a side-scrolling 2D beat-'em-up in which players face off against waves of enemies as they traverse a fantasy world. Players can choose between three characters with different abilities in combat. Axe Battler is a balanced warrior who wields a large sword. Tyris Flare wields a sword and has powerful magic. Gilius Thunderhead uses an axe and mixes strong attacks with lightning magic. The combat system is made up of basic attacks, jumping attacks, combinations and special moves. The stages have players walking left and right, fighting enemies coming from different directions. Magic is one of the most important mechanics in the game. Some enemies will also drop magic items that players can collect. These items boost the magic power of the character, so more powerful spells can be performed. The game also features mounted creatures. Players can ride creatures such as dragons and use them in combat. These mobs can be more powerful attacks and help clear out groups of enemies. Enemies are skeletons, soldiers, giants and other fantasy enemies. Different enemies require different approaches, especially when multiple enemies are attacking at once. Golden Axe also has two-player coop play . Two players can select different characters and fight through the adventure together . Crowd control becomes much easier . The stages have boss fights that challenge the fighting skills of the player. The players have to learn enemy patterns, avoid attacks and use magic effectively. Also included is a Duel Mode, a separate combat experience where characters can fight against opponents rather than go through the main adventure.

Start up the game, and select one of the three warriors available: Axe Battler, Tyris Flare, or Gilius Thunderhead. Help your character navigate the side-scrolling levels, attacking enemies that come at you from either side. Defeat regular enemies with your basic weapon attacks. You can combine attacks with movement and jumping to dodge incoming attacks. When necessary, jump over enemies, and attack enemies from above with jumping attacks. Gather magic items that are dropped by some enemies. These items add to your magic meter and let you perform special magic attacks. Save magic for fights against multiple enemies or difficult fights. “Having strong magic for groups and bosses can make later sections easier. Stages: Search for creatures that are mounted. Use their attacks on enemies and ride them when you can. Watch for where the enemy is positioned. Enemies can come from both sides, so don’t let yourself get surrounded. Work in two-player mode by coordinating attacks with the other player. One person controls the enemies on one side, and the other person controls the enemies on the other side. When fighting a boss, study the boss's movement and attack pattern. Attack when the opportunity arises, don’t take unnecessary damage. Progress through each phase until you reach the final battle with Death Adder. To finish the main quest and bring peace back to the kingdom, defeat Death Adder
