The world of Heroes of Might and Magic is a fantasy land of castles, heroes, creatures, magical locations, resources and rival forces. In this game you are a hero who has to explore the surrounding territory and build up enough military power to defeat opposing armies. The original Heroes concept is based on four major hero alignments: Knight, Barbarian, Sorceress, and Warlock. Each one represents a different fantasy faction, and provides a different style of army and strategy. The player starts a campaign with relatively few forces at his disposal. Exploration then becomes very important. Heroes roam the map, searching for resources, treasures, creatures, structures and strategic locations. Castles give the player a foothold to expand their kingdom. Players can recruit more powerful creatures and grow their armies by developing buildings and acquiring resources. You have to manage money and other resources carefully . You have to invest in building buildings and recruiting units . Enemy Heroes become a real threat at some point. Instead of fighting everything that comes along, players have to judge when their army is strong enough to attack. A poorly prepared battle can cost you valuable creatures and make future encounters much harder. So the campaign is a blend of exploration and warfare. The player gradually builds a stronger hero, expands the army, captures important locations and tries to beat the enemy forces. The fantasy setting gives the game its own identity. Knights, barbarians, sorceresses, warlocks, and supernatural creatures inhabit a world of traditional fantasy adventure and strategic warfare.

Heroes of Might and Magic is a turn based strategy game. Players will be moving their heroes across the map, collecting resources, visiting locations, recruiting creatures and battling enemy armies. You get a chance every turn to improve the player’s position. Heroes have limited movement points, so movement must be planned. If you blow those points recklessly, a hero might not make it to a key location or might retreat from an imminent enemy. Another core part of the gameplay are resources. Players must collect resources to build castles and keep a strong army. Exploring the map can reveal valuable resources that can be used to strengthen the player’s kingdom. Recruitment is just as important. Much of a hero’s power comes from the creatures that journey with the hero. The battle is a tactical encounter where two opposing forces clash. Positioning, unit strength and the abilities of different creatures are important. You begin by selecting one of the available campaigns or scenarios, and then prepare your hero for exploration. Initially your army is usually smaller than the forces you hope to command later. Move your hero on the map and explore the surrounding areas. Search for resources, treasure, castles, creatures and other useful locations. Exploration is the best way to increase your strategic options. If you find a creature that can be recruited, think about whether it is worth the resources you have to add to your army. A larger army is good, but if you spend everything immediately you may not have enough for later development. Go back to your castle when you have to and upgrade the buildings you have. Development can give you access to stronger units and more strategic options. Watch enemy heroes. When an opponent is coming , compare the size and strength of the two armies before battle . Fighting too soon can be dangerous. You need to think about what units you want to attack the enemy with while fighting and how you want the battle to go. Save valuable forces whenever possible. Too many lost units can make the battles that follow more difficult. Keep exploring, levelling your hero, building your army, and defeating enemies until you have achieved the goals of the scenario. The game is turn-based so there’s no need to rush. Learn the map, and make decisions based on the resources available and army strength.
