UNO is based on the traditional card game where the main objective is to get rid of all the cards in your hand before the other players. UNO is not a typical adventure game, it does not have a character-driven storyline, exploration campaign or scripted narrative. Instead each match tells its own story through the cards played, the changing score and the players’ choices. In the Game Boy Color version, the player battles computer-controlled opponents in various conditions. The game is based on the well known rules of UNO, with the addition of special cards and alternative game modes adapted to the portable format. Players should pay attention to the color and number of cards being played and when to play powerful action cards. The closer they get to emptying their hands the more difficult it is. If the player who has only a few cards left plays a Draw Two, Reverse, Skip or Wild card at the right time, it can suddenly lose its advantage. This makes for a match that is always changing, where every turn can have an impact on the end result. The Game Boy Color version also has different background themes and special cards that give the portable version its own identity. Players can also play against computer opponents, or link up with another compatible Game Boy system for multiplayer matches using the link cable.

UNO on Game Boy Color is a digital card game that plays by the same rules as the physical UNO card game. Players are dealt a hand of cards and take turns playing a card that matches the active card by color, number, or symbol. If a player is unable to make a legal play he must draw a card according to the rules of the game. The game features the familiar colored cards plus action cards that can turn a round around. Skip cards make play skip to the next player, Reverse cards change the direction of play, and Draw cards force another player to take cards into their hand. When you pick up a wild card, you get to choose the next color. The aim is to get rid of the cards in your hand before anyone else. Each round you win adds to the target score you have chosen, so a long game is more of a strategy than just winning a hand. Players need to know when to play their best cards and when it is better to hold them back. The Game Boy Color version provides a single player mode against computer opponents or a multiplayer mode using a Game Link Cable. Open UNO and choose the mode you want to play. In a normal match each player receives cards and one card is put as the starter card. Players then take turns playing a card of the same color, number or symbol as the top card in the pile. For example, if the active card is a red 7, then the player may normally play a red card or a 7 card. They can also be played as action cards if their criteria are met. Wild cards are more flexible, because they allow the player to choose the color that will be played next. Keep an eye on the number of cards left in each player’s hand. If your opponent is down to only a few cards, defensive action cards can become very important. At the same time, don't hold on to too many cards, as the cards left in your opponents' hands affect the final scoring. When you have only one card left in the game of UNO, shout UNO, as the rule states. Play through the end of the round, and continue playing through any extra rounds your chosen scoring system requires.
