The story of Hulk takes place after the events of the film of 2003. Bruce Banner has been living with the aftermath of gamma radiation, trying to understand and control the Hulk within him. He returns to civilisation and clashes with a new threat connected to gamma technology. The main villain is The Leader who wants to use the same gamma-based technology that created the Hulk. His plan is to develop potent gamma-infused beings and amass an army to execute his designs. Bruce has to figure out what’s going on, all the while keeping his identity and relationship to the Hulk under wraps. The story takes place in places such as San Francisco, Alcatraz, Gamma Base and New Freehold. As the situation develops, Bruce's relationship with Betty Ross becomes more important. As the campaign progresses, Banner must depend on both his brains and Hulk’s raw power to stay alive. The story brings a host of new gamma powered foes and villains such as Ravage, Half-Life, Madman, Flux and The Leader. Eventually the campaign builds to a confrontation with The Leader and the forces generated by his experiments.

The gameplay in Hulk is split between two different styles. When you’re in control of the Hulk, the game is a 3D beat-’em-up of destruction. Hulk can punch enemies, perform combos, grab opponents, throw items, use environmental weapons, jump, and smash parts of the environment. The game has a particular focus on environments where objects can be destroyed or used as weapons. Hulk can lift things like pipes, rocks, columns, crates, cars and other heavy objects. These objects are swung or thrown at enemies. Some attacks can also be used against incoming projectiles, like being able to punch rockets back towards enemies with perfect timing, as noted in the GameCube guide. Bruce banner sections are much more stealth oriented. Banner is less powerful than Hulk and is therefore encouraged to avoid direct combat. Players can hide from guards, sneak through restricted areas, push crates, interact with terminals and solve puzzles. Inside the guide it covers puzzles that involve matching numbers and letters within a time limit. This difference between Bruce and Hulk is one of the main features of the game. Bruce uses stealth and problem solving. Hulk uses power, battle and destruction of the environment.

Choose the main story campaign and follow the mission objectives shown on screen. When you get to control Hulk you will be able to move with the Control Stick, lock onto enemies with R, attack with B, grab enemies or objects with X, jump with A and gamma attacks with Y. Use mix punches and grabs, jumps, environmental objects and gamma abilities to deal with groups of enemies. When you play as Bruce Banner, the way you play is completely different: move carefully, crouch when necessary, avoid guards, interact with crates and terminals, and use stealth attacks when an enemy is vulnerable. You can also find useful objects and hidden pickups by looking around the environment.
