Mario Tennis doesn’t have a traditional story-driven campaign. It’s not really about competitive tennis and progressing thru tournaments. Players can choose a character from the roster and play various tennis matches. The aim is to defeat opponents, win matches and advance in tournaments. The visual identity of the game is one that comes from the Mario universe, with familiar characters popping up on colorful tennis courts. Rather than a scripted narrative, the player’s own progression comes from improving their tennis skills and winning tougher and tougher matches.

Mario Tennis follows the same rules as tennis, but has an arcade-style game play. Then players take control of their chosen character, moving around the court and returning the ball to their opponent. Timing is one of the most important elements in the game. Players can make stronger and more accurate shots when they hit the ball at the right time. Poor returns or missed opportunities can be the result of bad timing. Players can use a variety of types of shots, such as normal shots, topspin, slices, lobs and drop shots. Each shot has a different purpose. So players can develop tactics according to the position of their opponent. Positioning is also very important. Players must be able to foresee the path of the ball and get into the right position before the return ball. In doubles, strategy becomes a different animal as two players share each side of the court. A lot of it is good positioning and co-ordination.

Start by selecting your preferred character and game mode. Choose singles if you want to focus on one-on-one competition or doubles if you want a team-based match. During gameplay, use the Control Stick to move your character around the court. Position yourself near the expected landing point of the ball. Use the appropriate shot button to return the ball. Timing your shot correctly can improve its speed, accuracy, and effectiveness. Use different shots depending on the situation. A powerful shot can pressure an opponent, while a lob can send the ball over an opponent who has moved close to the net. A drop shot can be useful when the opponent is positioned far away. Pay attention to your opponent's position and avoid repeatedly using the same strategy. Moving your opponent around the court can create openings for winning shots. In doubles, communicate with your partner and maintain good court coverage. Avoid leaving large areas of the court open.
