The player controls Solid Snake, a rookie operative of the special forces organization FOXHOUND. Snake is sent to infiltrate Outer Heaven, a fortified military state in southern Africa controlled by a mysterious mercenary leader known as Big Boss. FOXHOUND sends another operative, Grey Fox, to Outer Heaven to investigate reports of a dangerous weapon. Grey Fox eventually disappears and Snake is sent in to continue the mission and find out what happened. Snake’s goals get progressively more complex as he investigates the facility. He must find Grey Fox, rescue important prisoners, gather intelligence, and learn about the mysterious Metal Gear TX-55. Metal Gear is a mobile nuclear weapon that can launch nuclear missiles from almost anywhere. Should Outer Heaven succeed in building the weapon, it will pose a grave danger to the world. Snake must sneak into the enemy base, obtain the necessary information, destroy the Metal Gear project and finally fight the forces that control Outer Heaven.

Metal Gear is all about stealth, infiltration, exploration and tactical combat. Instead of rushing in and attacking all enemies on the map, players will want to avoid detection where possible. Snake can sneak through enemy lines, watching the patrols’ movements. Guards have specific fields of vision and if you walk into their line of sight you will trigger an alert. The players therefore have to be careful when to move and when to stay hidden. Snake has an arsenal of weapons and equipment that come in handy during the mission. There are situations where you have to engage in direct combat and situations where you can avoid the enemies completely. Exploration is also a big part of the game. Players must search various rooms and locations for weapons, ammunition, gear, access cards and other helpful items. Certain areas will be locked until you have the correct key card or equipment. Communication is another important part of the mission. Snake receives information and directions that help him understand the objectives and how to traverse the enemy facility. The game mixes combat and stealth in a way that rewards thoughtful planning. If you just attack enemies all the time, you can very quickly run out of ammo or grab unwanted attention. However, if you learn enemy patterns, you can often move forward more efficiently.

Begin the game as Solid Snake and follow the mission objectives given through the game’s communication system. Your main goal is to penetrate Outer Heaven without raising any unnecessary suspicions. Use the directional controls to move Snake around the various areas. Be alert to the movements of the enemy and do not enter their field of vision. If Snake is spotted by an enemy, it may raise an alarm and bring other enemies into the fight. Search rooms and areas for useful equipment, weapons, ammo, rations and access cards. Some places may require special equipment before they can be explored. Use weapons when needed, but remember stealth is an important part of the game. Sometimes it is better to not have enemies than to fight them. Free prisoners and gather intel to unlock more objectives. As Snake moves forward, the enemies he comes across will be more powerful and the places he visits will be more dangerous. Use mission information and communication messages to figure out where you need to go. Eventually, Snake must locate and destroy the Metal Gear weapon and confront the forces behind Outer Heaven.
