Lara thinks that these artefacts could unlock the secrets of the ancient Norse realm of Helheim. At the same time, Lara continues to investigate mysteries surrounding her family and mother. Her journey is still affected by events in past adventures. As Lara advances, she faces enemies who are also searching for powerful artefacts. She must unlock ancient secrets, solve intricate puzzles and survive perilous environments to find the truth.

Tomb Raider: Underworld is an action-adventure game with third-person action and exploration/platforming elements. Lara can jump between platforms, climb walls and swim underwater, as well as use her grappling equipment and interact with objects in the environment. Players have to be very aware of their surroundings to find pathways and hidden areas. The game features large environments with many paths and secrets. Exploration is a significant part of progression as Lara often needs to find switches, artefacts, mechanisms or alternative routes before she can continue. Combat is another huge part of it. Lara can fight enemies with firearms, as well as interact with the environment for tactical advantages. The game also includes a more advanced movement and interaction system than previous games in the series.

Begin by controlling Lara through the game's different environments. Explore your surroundings carefully and look for climbable surfaces, ledges, switches, and objects that can be interacted with. Use Lara's jumping and climbing abilities to reach higher platforms and cross dangerous gaps. When you encounter enemies, use your weapons to defend yourself. Move around the environment instead of remaining in one position during combat. Many areas contain puzzles. Examine the environment and search for mechanisms that can open doors or reveal new paths. Underwater sections require careful navigation. Keep track of your surroundings and look for passages that lead toward the objective. Collect hidden treasures and artifacts while exploring if you want to discover more of the game's secrets.
