Midnight Club: L.A. Remix is the story of a street racer who moves from the East Coast to Los Angeles to make his mark in the city’s underground racing scene. The player builds credibility by challenging racers, winning events, earning money and upgrading vehicles, rather than entering a traditional professional racing championship. The Los Angeles career gradually introduces the player to different areas of the city and different kinds of competitors. In the early races the player learns the basics of street racing, while the later events are more demanding with stronger vehicles and tougher opponents. Reputation is important because it allows the player to go further in the career, unlock more races, cars, upgrades and challenges. The Los Angeles campaign does not have one standard type of race, but different formats of races. Players can take part in circuit events, checkpoint races, time trials, tournaments, red-light races and other challenges. Some races involve careful route selection, as there is no set “racing circuit” which all competitors must follow the same route . The competition gets harder if it comes to a player's reputation. Milestones in the career are rival racers and championship events. The ultimate goal in Los Angeles is to become one of the best street racers in the city. The PSP version also has an extra storyline that differs from the console version. Upon completing the Los Angeles career, the player receives a mysterious invitation related to Tokyo. This unlocks the Tokyo career and allows the player to go to Japan and race an entirely new set of racers. Tokyo is far more than a little bonus area. It has its own career ladder, races, tournaments, rivals, vehicles and objectives. This second campaign feels much more like L.A. Remix than a simple portable conversion. The Tokyo section also offers a change of atmosphere. Los Angeles is about the culture of American street racers, Tokyo is more about the streets of a Japanese city and a different set of racers. So in one PSP game players can enjoy two different worlds.

Midnight Club: L.A. Remix is all about arcade-style street racing at high speeds. Players race through cityscapes, trying to get to checkpoints or other players as quickly as possible, choosing their own routes, rather than driving around traditional race tracks. The open-road design allows the player a lot of freedom during races. Streets, intersections, shortcuts and alternate routes can all become part of a race. A city-savvy player can sometimes find a faster route than an opponent who simply takes the most obvious route. There are multiple classes of vehicles in the game such as tuners, muscle cars, luxury vehicles, exotic cars and motorcycles. Every vehicle has its own handling characteristics, acceleration, top speed, and general driving feel. This makes the choice of vehicle an important one in preparing for a particular race. Customization is also a major part of the gameplay. Vehicles can be upgraded with performance improvements and visual modifications. You can customize street racing machines with body parts, paint, rims, vinyl designs, and more. The original game description specifically mentions body kits, paint styles, rims, vinyls and realistic damage effects. Nitrous is an extra burst of speed that can be very useful on straightaways, for overtaking opportunities, and at the end of a race. Players also have access to special driving abilities depending on the vehicle class. These abilities can change the way a race is approached and give skilled players additional tools during difficult events. The game also features realistic-looking damage effects. Crashes and collisions can visibly affect the vehicle, making reckless driving a potential disadvantage. Although the game is primarily arcade-focused, the damage presentation adds more weight to high-speed collisions. Motorcycles are another important part of L.A. Remix. Unlike the division of some car selections between Los Angeles and Tokyo, motorcycles can be used across both cities. This gives players another way to approach races and provides a different handling experience compared with cars. The PSP version also includes multiplayer functionality. GameFAQs lists the title as a one-player game in its main game detail, while other PSP release databases document multiplayer support for the title, so exact multiplayer functionality can depend on the version and mode being used.

Choose your career or make one to begin the game. Your primary goal is to build a reputation in Los Angeles through the races and challenges you participate in. Get a car that will do and go to the first event you can get into. Use the analog stick to steer and keep control of your vehicle while racing. PSP controls are based on fast arcade style moves, and acceleration, braking, handbraking, nitrous and special moves are all performed with no hard inputs. Line up your speed so you can slow down enough when you’re approaching corners to remain in control. Knowing when to brake, when to use the handbrake and when to use nitrous can make a huge difference in tough races. In many street races, you can take several routes. Watch the road ahead, and learn the layout of the city so you can spot shortcuts and avoid unnecessary turns. Sometimes it’s faster to take a slightly longer route if it allows you to keep up a higher speed. Use the nitrous wisely. It can be good to save a boost for a long straight or the final section of a race, when you want to overtake someone. Using it right after every corner is not always the best tactic. Your reputation and money will go up as you win races You use money to upgrade and customize your vehicles, and reputation to unlock more career events. Play full tournaments and championship events to continue on your way to the end of the Los Angeles career. The Tokyo career becomes available once the required Los Angeles progression has been completed. Tokyo is another career experience and players should expect another set of races, challenges and progression. This means the game is more than a straight port of the Los Angeles campaign.
