Monsters, Inc. |ROM-DOWNLOAD Story

Disney/Pixar Monsters, Inc. for Game Boy Color is a 2D side-scrolling platform adventure, based on the world of the Pixar animated movie. The game has Sulley and Mike Wazowski trying to protect Boo and get through the monster world. The Game Boy Color version retells the basic premise of the movie and adapts it to a compact platforming adventure designed for the handheld system. The story begins around the Monsters, Inc. factory and quickly builds into a wild adventure with Boo, Randall, the Child Detection Agency, and the perils of the monster world. Sulley and Mike must travel through various areas completing objectives, collecting useful items, avoiding hazards and moving through levels of increasing difficulty. The game is set in locations based on the film, including the Monsters, Inc. factory, children's bedrooms, the streets of Monstropolis and snowy Himalayan settings. The different locations provide the adventure with a variety of visual settings, yet still maintain the basic side-scrolling platform structure throughout the game. Sulley and Mike don’t play exactly the same. Some stages require certain character while in some sections the player can switch between them. Sulley is larger, able to interact with objects and break through some obstacles. Mike is smaller and can fit into places Sulley can not. Boo is the heart of the adventure. The two monsters have to deal with the dangers of trying to keep her safe and also not get detected by the Child Detection Agency. The game turns the movie’s joke-monster-and-child premise into a platforming gauntlet. Throughout the adventure, the player will face different enemies and environmental hazards. Randall and other threats make it a harder trip. Different objectives require the player to collect objects, get to certain locations or scare children. So the story is told through gameplay, rather than a long cinematic campaign. Players will move through the levels, complete their objectives and continue the adventure as Sulley and Mike work together to protect Boo and return her safely.

Monsters, Inc. |ROM-DOWNLOAD Gameplay

Monsters, Inc. for the Game Boy Color is a single-player 2D side scrolling platformer. The game includes 12 levels and lets players control both Sulley and Mike, whose different abilities are a key part of navigating the stages. The basic gameplay involves moving across platforms, avoiding hazards, defeating or scaring away enemies, collecting items and completing the required objective. Instead of each level being a simple race to the exit, the game adds in different objectives to keep the levels fresh. Some levels have the player collect a certain number of items. Other stages require the player to do something, like scare a certain number of children. This adds a little more variety to the platforming segments than just a left to right run. Sulley and Mike have different powers. Sulley can move things around and use them to make ways to higher platforms. He can also bash through some walls by charging into them, and can hang from ledges. Mike is smaller and able to crawl through tight spaces, and can double jump. Their attacks are different as well. Mike can throw cans of Blort cola. Sulley can use his monster abilities and throw toys in the right situations. This is more than just a cosmetic change to being able to switch characters. Collectibles are also present in the game. Blort cans are especially important as they act as both a health item and ammunition for Mike. Chinese takeout boxes can be collected, with ten boxes providing an extra life, teddy bears provide an immediate life bonus. Hazard includes toys and other objects that can harm the characters. Later levels introduce Child Detection Agency agents and some areas are more dangerous as contact with these agents can cost a life immediately. The level design combines simple platforming with a bit of light environmental puzzling. Players may have to push objects, find a way around barriers, use character-specific abilities, and time jumps carefully to successfully get to the next area. The end result is a straight forward side scrolling platformer that takes the Monsters, Inc. cast and settings, but mixes in enough character specific gameplay and goals to give the game a personality of its own.

How to Play Monsters, Inc. |ROM-DOWNLOAD

From the main menu, start the game and begin a new adventure. You play as Sulley, Mike or alternate between them when the stage permits working your way through a series of side scrolling levels. Use the Control Pad to move your character on-screen. “A” to jump, “B” to use the character’s attack or special action. Timing is important, as many platforms, obstacles and enemies require you to act at the right moment. Use Mike’s smaller size to get to tight spots when controlling him. Mike can also do a double jump, useful for reaching higher platforms or recovering from awkward jumps. He throws Blort cans at enemies, and they are also tied into his health system. When controlling Sulley, exploit his strength. He can move objects in the environment and use them as platforms. His charge can also blow through some obstacles, letting him reach places Mike can't. Check out the goal of each level. Some stages will require you to find the exit, others will require you to collect certain items or complete a task before you can progress. Whenever you can, grab useful items. Chinese food boxes contribute to extra lives. Teddy bears instantly provide a life bonus. Mike finds blort cans especially useful because they can be used both offensively and defensively. Stay away from dangerous objects and enemies. Agents of the Child Detection Agency, in later sections, should be especially wary, as contact with them can mean death in an instant. SELECT allows you to change between characters you have. The game manual specifically calls out SELECT as the control for switching characters. See which character works best for the situation as you go along. Mike can double-jump and squeeze into small spaces, making him more useful in tight areas, while Sully is stronger and can manipulate objects, making him more effective around heavy obstacles. The end goal is to complete the goal of each stage, survive the hazards, and make it through the journey until Boo is safely returned and the adventure is over.
