NAM-1975 takes place in the last months of the Vietnam War and stars two American Special Forces soldiers, Silver and Brown. They are sent back into Vietnam to rescue Dr. R. Muckly, a former U.S. Army scientist who has been kidnaped along with his daughter Nancy. What seems to be a simple rescue mission rapidly turns into a deadly military operation as the soldiers come face to face with heavily armed enemy forces on the battlefield. Silver and Brown must advance deeper into the war-torn environment as they encounter waves of enemy soldiers and military vehicles. Their enemies have machine guns, explosives, tanks, helicopters and other battlefield weapons. The soldiers move and fire as they go, all the while trying to avoid the enormous amount of incoming enemy fire. The battlefield gets more and more dangerous with the continuation of the mission. The soldiers encounter tougher enemies and more devastating attacks, requiring them to make better use of the weapons and evasive movements at their disposal. The rescue mission, then, becomes a fight for survival as well as a search for Dr. Muckly and Nancy. The mood of the game is heavily inspired by the look and feel of Vietnam War movies. The battlefield is portrayed as a very dangerous and chaotic place: the screen is filled with military vehicles, explosions, enemy troops and constant gunfire. The presentation helped NAM-1975 to develop a darker military identity than many of its arcade shooter contemporaries. The soldiers slowly learn more about the kidnapping and the people behind the operation. Their mission requires them to push through harder and harder encounters and defeat powerful enemies protecting the final areas. The story is mostly told through brief sequences and mission progression rather than a long cinematic campaign. The focus is still on arcade action, with the story giving the reason why the player is traveling across the battlefield.

NAM-1975 is a shooting-gallery arcade game in the third person. The player’s soldier is visible in the foreground and a targeting cursor is used to aim weapons at enemies. The battlefield keeps moving forward, with new enemies and obstacles appearing. For them to survive, players have to control movement and aiming at the same time. The main armament is the machine gun. The player moves the targeting cursor over enemy soldiers and vehicles and fires repeatedly to take out threats. Enemy formations can come from anywhere on the screen, so quick reactions are essential. Players can collect stronger weapons and explosives besides the standard machine gun. The weapons available are upgraded machine guns, missiles and flame throwers. The explosive options are grenades and Spark Bombs and Napalm Bombs. These weapons do a lot more offensive damage and can help clear groups of enemies. In addition, the game has an evasive movement system. Players can roll/flip out of attack coming in. This is especially important when the screen is full of bullets, grenades, missiles, tanks and other hazards. There should be variety in the challenge of enemies. Players will face infantry soldiers, as well as tanks, helicopters and other military threats. Each enemy type has its own priorities in selecting targets, so players will have to decide which targets need to be eliminated first. The battle field scrolls continuously, so players cannot stay still forever. They need to keep pace with the action, reacting to new enemies and environmental situations. Hostages can also be included in the game play. Also, the player can receive some additional help from a hostage rescue, where rescued characters will shoot at enemies. The game is designed to be hard in the classic arcade sense. Players have to learn the patterns of the enemies, improve the accuracy of their aim, use power-ups effectively and master evasive movements. This makes NAM-1975 especially suited for short, intense arcade sessions, by design.

Start the game and choose the one-player or two-player mode available. When the mission starts, your soldier is in the foreground, with the battlefield behind him in the background. Use the arrow keys to move your soldier and get him to safety. At the same time, pass the targeting cursor over enemies and press the machine gun button to fire. First attack dangerous enemies. Tanks, helicopters, heavily armed soldiers and enemies preparing powerful attacks can pose serious threats if left on-screen for too long. If you see a weapon upgrade, pick it up. Regular attacks can be increased with more powerful machine guns and missiles and flamethrowers are great for taking out groups or tougher enemies. Explosive weapons like grenades can also be very useful when multiple enemies turn up together. If at all possible, learn the evasive roll or flip. When enemy bullets or explosives are coming, use the movement to dodge the attack. It gives the soldier a little protection and is especially useful in rough encounters. When the field is full, move. It still makes it easier for enemies to surround the character or hit him with projectiles when standing too long. If hostages are present, rescue them if you can. Rescued hostages can help you out by shooting enemies, providing you with more support during the mission. Kill the enemy forces . Keep moving forward through the scrolling battlefield . Each section brings new dangers and more challenging encounters. Boss fights are all about learning their attack patterns and staying alive. Use powerful weapons as needed and avoid dangerous attacks. The main objective is to survive the battlefield, vanquish enemy forces, rescue the kidnaped targets and complete the mission.
