Mario gets a strange letter from Princess Peach asking him to help find the legendary Crystal Stars. The letter tells him to go to the town of Rogueport, where he finds an ancient treasure hidden under the town. The Crystal Stars are tied to an ancient Thousand-Year Door, and many groups are trying to find them for their own plans. Mario must travel around the world and find the Crystal Stars and reveal the secrets of the ancient treasure. Mario meets many companions on his journey, each with their own stories and abilities. They fight enemies, solve puzzles, explore dangerous locations, and slowly uncover the truth behind the Thousand-Year Door. As the game progresses, Mario learns that the adventure is much more dangerous than it first seemed, culminating in a major showdown with the ancient power that lurks beneath Rogueport.

The game features turn-based RPG combat with a distinctive action-command system. In battles players choose attacks, items, special moves or defensive moves. Timing is important, as hitting the buttons successfully during attacks can increase your damage. Defensive action commands can also be used to reduce damage taken by players. Mario can equip different badges, which change his abilities. Badges cost Badge Points which allows players to make different builds based on their combat style. Companions have abilities of their own, and can even fight alongside you. Every companion has strengths useful against certain enemies and in certain situations. Companions are useful outside of combat for solving environmental puzzles. Their powers let Mario walk on new areas , interact with objects and overcome obstacles .

Start your journey in Rogueport and follow the story to find out where the Crystal Stars are. Explore towns and dungeons, talk to characters, and search for hidden items. Use Mario’s powers and the powers of his companions to solve environmental puzzles. When you face enemies, you enter turn-based combat, choosing the most suitable attack or ability. During attacks, watch for the action commands. Good timing allows you to hit harder and makes fights easier. Earn XP and level up by collecting Star Points from battles. When Mario levels up, you can increase his HP, FP or Badge Points. Collect badges along the way and equip them to customize Mario’s abilities. Explore new areas, defeat bosses, collect Crystal Stars, and unlock the secrets of the Thousand-Year Door.
