Joanna Dark is a promising new agent for the Carrington Institute in Perfect Dark. After finishing her training, Joanna is assigned more and more dangerous missions, which soon reveal a much larger conspiracy than she had ever dreamed of. Her first big job is to break into the headquarters of dataDyne, a powerful corporation that deals in high-level technological research. What starts out as a simple rescue mission soon ties into secret projects and information that could have dire consequences for the future of mankind. Joanna's missions slowly reveal the complex relationship between the Carrington Institute and dataDyne. The two organizations are on opposite sides of the table, with Carrington’s group looking into dangerous developments, while dataDyne pursues its own ambitious technological agenda. Joanna visits corporate facilities, the Carrington Villa, Chicago, Area 51, military bases, Air Force One, underwater research facilities and other highly secured places as she goes from mission to mission. Every assignment presents different goals and settings. Joanna isn’t the only one investigating. The main characters are Daniel Carrington, head of the Carrington Institute, seasoned operative Jonathan Dark, Cassandra de Vries, a key player inside dataDyne, and the mysterious alien Elvis. The revelation of alien involvement changes the nature of the conflict. What starts out as a battle between two rival human organizations turns out to be something far greater, involving alien technology and the Skedar. The game’s story becomes less and less about stopping a disastrous plan involving powerful alien technology. Joanna must work with allies, infiltrate enemy bases, retrieve key information and stop the forces that want to use the technology for their own purposes. The campaign is divided into assignments, with missions featuring different goals according to the chosen difficulty. Increased difficulties add new objectives and make enemies more dangerous, providing a reason for experienced players to replay completed missions. The story combines espionage, science-fiction, corporate conspiracy, military operations and alien technology. Instead of a simple good-versus-evil story, Perfect Dark slowly reveals hidden motives and alliances as Joanna uncovers more clues. The final missions tie together all the various strands of the conspiracy and Joanna and her allies are forced to face the threat head on. Ultimately, the campaign suggests that Joanna Dark is the key operative, able to handle the dangerous situations surrounding the Carrington Institute and its enemies.

Perfect Dark is a first-person shooter with a mission-based gameplay. Players control Joanna Dark from a first-person perspective and use a wide range of weapons to complete objectives and survive enemy encounters. This is not a simple arcade shooter where you just shoot everything. Here you have to focus on completing specific mission objectives. Players may have to gather documents, rescue characters, activate devices, gather information, protect allies, or reach a certain location. Weapons are a core element of the game. Perfect Dark has more than 40 different weapons and devices, ranging from pistols and rifles to sniper weapons, explosives, futuristic guns and specialized equipment. Many weapons have secondary functions , which give you more tactical options . The game also includes stealth mechanics. Sometimes you can do more damage by NOT fighting every enemy you see. Players are able to traverse restricted areas with suppressed weapons, disguise mechanics, and careful positioning. Enemy behavior is also an important part of the experience. Guards can investigate suspicious activity, attack the player, react to things around them. In some missions there are friendly computer controlled characters that can help Joanna. The game offers several difficulty levels. missions have less objectives and easier difficulty makes the experience more accessible. Higher difficulty levels add more objectives and demand more environmental awareness. Perfect Dark offers a huge multiplayer component as well. The Combat Simulator offers players the chance to compete in different multiplayer scenarios, while cooperative modes allow players to work together. One of the more interesting multiplayer modes is Counter-Operative mode, where one player takes control of Joanna and the other controls enemy characters. This is a one-of-a-kind competitive campaign variation. The Expansion Pak for the Nintendo 64 enhances the game. Nintendo says the single-player missions and multiplayer modes (3-4 players) require the Expansion Pak, but some 1-2 player multiplayer and Challenge Mode features can be played without it.

Launch Perfect Dark and select the main solo campaign to begin Joanna Dark’s missions. In an effort to get a feel for the game’s objectives and controls, new players can select a lower difficulty level before trying the more difficult settings. Read the objectives for each mission carefully. Sometimes the goal isn't to kill every enemy. Some missions will ask you to do certain things, such as rescuing a character, gathering information, destroying equipment, activating a system or reaching a certain location. Watch out for guards and security systems as you move about the environment. Use the weapons at your disposal based on the circumstances, and don’t pick unnecessary fights when stealth is a better option. Joanna can move and aim, interact with objects, select weapons and do other things with the Nintendo 64 controller. The control scheme can be tailored to different preferences. If you are lugging around a ton of guns, use the weapon-selection system to quickly pick the right gun. Some weapons have secondary functions as well so experiment with them and see what they do. Look for mission-specific equipment. Certain assignments have specialized tools necessary to complete certain objectives. Protect friendly characters when the mission calls for it. Some allies can assist Joanna in battle, but they are also susceptible to enemy attacks. More careful planning is necessary at higher difficulty levels. Additional goals can inspire players to explore places they might otherwise overlook. Once the main missions of the game are done, players can try out the multiplayer and Challenge modes of the game. Combat Simulator allows competitive battles, while cooperative and Counter-Operative options provide alternative means to play the game. Before you start the match, set the number of players and the options for multiplayer sessions. Multiplayer modes are available for up to four players, and the Expansion Pak is required for four-player play.
