Unlike the mainline Pokémon RPG titles, Pokémon Pinball doesn't have a traditional story-driven campaign. Rather, it’s mostly about pinballing around, racking up points and collecting Pokémon. Players start with a Poké Ball and select from the Red and Blue tables available. They feature Pokémon-themed targets, bumpers, obstacles, and special areas on each table. The Pokémon that appear will vary depending on how the player plays. Players can encounter and catch Pokémon by hitting the right targets and completing special sequences. Captured Pokémon are recorded in the game’s Pokédex. The ultimate goal is to catch all 151 Pokémon that were part of the original Pokémon Red and Blue games. Certain Pokémon are easier to find than others, but rare Pokémon require achieving higher scores and completing specific sequences. And so the game turns Pokémon collecting into a pinball challenge. Instead of travelling through towns and on routes, players advance through various pinball objectives to fill out their Pokédex.

Pokémon Pinball is a classic pinball game with Pokémon-themed mechanics. Players control the flippers at the bottom of the table, and try to stop the Poké Ball from falling out. The Poké Ball rolls onto the table, bouncing off targets, bumpers, ramps, Pokémon and other objects. Players earn points by hitting targets and making various combinations. The higher your score is, the more options the game will give you and the more likely you are to run into rare Pokémon. There are two main tables: Red Field and Blue Field. All the tables are decorated with designs of Pokémon and locations from the original Pokémon games. Trainers can activate special modes for catching or evolving Pokémon. Catching a Pokémon adds it permanently to your Pokédex so you can continue your progress from game to game. Players can upgrade the Poké Ball to better balls like Great Ball, Ultra Ball and Master Ball which helps improve their scoring potential. The game also features bonus stages that offer opportunities to earn extra points and to catch Pokémon. The game supports a built-in rumble cartridge, so the Game Boy Colour can vibrate when important things happen, giving some physical feedback to the pinball experience.

Launch the game and choose the Red Field or Blue Field. Use the left and right controls to control the flippers and keep the Poké Ball from falling through the bottom of the table. To rack up points, aim the Poké Ball toward bumpers, targets, ramps and Pokémon-related objects. Try to hit special targets and turn on different modes. These modes allow you to find , catch , or develop Pokémon . Keep the Poké Ball rolling as long as you can. You have limited attempts and every time you lose the ball you lose one, so you'll have to time your flips well. Notice the layout of the table and learn where the ball is likely to bounce. Skilled players can use the flippers to send the ball to particular targets. Catch Pokemon and look in your Pokedex to check which creatures you have captured. If you can, upgrade your Poké Ball for better chances to score. Explore bonus stages and special sequences to find more Pokémon. The ultimate challenge is to fill your Pokédex as you rack up higher and higher scores.
