The story begins with Harry Mason driving his young daughter, Cheryl, across the countryside. As they get closer to Silent Hill in the nite, a weird figure suddenly shows up in the road. Harry swerves to avoid it and loses control of the car and crashes. When Harry wakes Cheryl is gone. Harry left the wreckage, only to find himself in the strange town of Silent Hill. The town is cloaked in heavy fog, deserted, and strange beings begin to appear. Harry is intent on finding his daughter and starts to explore the town. Following the clues, he suspects that Cheryl might have gone deeper into Silent Hill. In his search, Harry meets a number of mysterious characters, including Cybil Bennett, a police officer, who is also trapped in the town. Harry also meets Dahlia Gillespie, who knows more and more about the strange goings-on in the town. As Harry wanders through Silent Hill, reality begins to change. The usual foggy town can suddenly become the Otherworld, a dark, rust-covered alternate dimension. Harry discovers that the town’s strange occurrences tie back to an occult organization and a great supernatural power. His investigation eventually leads him into the mystery surrounding Alessa Gillespie, whose past is deeply connected to the supernatural occurrences happening throughout Silent Hill. The narrative is delivered through exploration, records, conversations, environmental clues and the player's discoveries. The game also has multiple endings.
