The story begins in the Dragon Realms when getting ready for a celebration. During the festivities, Ripto and his forces put forth a plan to steal the magical dragonflies that live throughout the realm. The dragonflies are essential to the balance of the Dragon Realms, so their disappearance creates a major problem for Spyro and his friends. Spyro sets off to find the missing dragonflies and bring order back. His journey takes him through a series of colourful environments filled with enemies, platforms, secret areas, gems, minigames and more. Along the way, he encounters familiar characters and uses new abilities to reach areas that would otherwise be inaccessible. The adventure is the classic Spyro idea of exploring and collecting. Rather than simply defeating enemies and finding an exit, the player is encouraged to explore each environment for collectibles and rescue dragonflies.

Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly focuses on 3D exploration, platforming, combat and collecting. Spyro wanders through large environments looking for dragonflies and gems. He can jump, glide, charge, head-bash and breathe attacks. One of the biggest additions to the game is the breath system. Depending on the circumstances, Spyro can change between breath types. Flame breath is his traditional offensive ability, while ice, bubble and electric breath offer different ways to handle enemies and interact with the environment. Exploration is equally important. Players can use Spyro’s glide to bridge gaps and reach distant platforms, and underwater sections have their own movement mechanics. The vehicle sequences offer another change of pace, with sections of tank, aircraft, rocket, UFO and surfboard.

Fire up the game and lead Spyro through the Dragon Realms in search of stolen dragonflies and gems. Control Stick to move, A to jump, B to charge, and X to use Spyro's current breath ability. R pops up the inventory, Z brings up the Atlas and L cycles through the available breath types. Double-tap A to glide. To hover, begin a glide, then press A, A, Y. Don’t just run straight to the next objective, explore platforms, battle enemies, complete challenges and discover hidden areas. Go back to old locations when you get new abilities and check out places you couldn't get to before. Vehicle sections use different controls, so pay attention to the on-screen instructions when entering tanks, aircraft, or other vehicles.
