Top Gear is a classic arcade style racing game developed by Gremlin Graphics and published by Kemco in North America for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Unlike story-heavy racing games, Top Gear doesn’t have a traditional narrative campaign with characters and cinematic events. Rather, its main goal is to participate in an international racing championship and compete across various challenging tracks. Players pick a car, choose their racing conditions, pick a country, and then try to finish races before their opponents do. Racing is described as an international competition, with the courses set in different parts of the world. The original game has 32 tracks, with locations from Paris and Rio to courses in the United States, Japan, Germany, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Scandinavia and South America. The players get to choose which country they want to represent before they start their racing campaign. The real challenge is not just getting to the finish line. Players have to balance speed, steering, fuel, nitro boosts, road obstacles, pit stops and traffic in a bid to beat computer-controlled opponents or another human player. Races can be run in day or night conditions, providing a different presentation and requiring players to react quickly to changes on the track. Top Gear also lets players select from four different cars. Each car has different properties, like maximum speed, acceleration, tire grip and fuel consumption. This means that a vehicle choice is part of the strategy before the race has even begun. Some cars are easier to control with a better grip, while others might have a higher top speed but require more careful driving. Therefore, the game is based on racing rather than a typical story. Before the race, the game shows data such as max speed, acceleration, tire grip and fuel consumption. Players must select a car that fits their driving style and the demands of the course. In races, the management of fuel is particularly important. Cars use fuel when they drive, so players should pay attention to the fuel gauge and use pit stops when necessary. Running low on fuel can really hurt a player’s chance of successfully finishing the race. Nitro provides yet another strategic resource that delivers a quick burst of speed. The shoulder buttons can be used to shift gears with the manual transmission selected.

The Amateur level is recommended for beginners, but the game also has Professional and Championship levels. Next choose the country or racing location you want to represent. There are several international areas and locations in the game, such as USA, South America, Japan, Germany, Scandinavia, France, Italy and the UK. You can also choose whether the speed display is MPH or KPH. Choose your car carefully before the race starts. Look at the top speed, the acceleration, the tire grip and the fuel consumption. Once the race begins, use the D-Pad to steer left and right, and use the accelerator to build speed. Never take a hard corner at full speed. Brake before the turn. Don't use your Nitro right away, use it tactically. It’s a quick acceleration boost that can help you overtake opponents or get some speed on suitable parts of a track. Watch out for fuel as well, because you may need to pit during longer races. If you’re using a manual transmission, shift gears with the appropriate shoulder buttons. Automatic transmission is an easier choice for those players who want to focus more on steering, accelerating, braking and nitro. The original game had four different controller layouts so players could pick the most comfortable one for them. The main aim is to complete each race successfully while keeping ahead of the competition. A good knowledge of the layout of each track, the strengths of your car, avoiding obstacles and managing your nitro and fuel will help you improve your results.
