The story starts with Jimmy Hopkins being dropped off at Bullworth Academy by his mother and her new husband. Jimmy’s mother runs off on another honeymoon and leaves him to deal with the strange and unfriendly school environment. Jimmy quickly learns that Bullworth is run by different student cliques such as the Bullies, Nerds, Preppies, Greasers and Jocks. Every group has its own character, social structure and fights. For now Jimmy’s biggest concern is getting through school and the problem students. But as he gets caught up with different groups he slowly becomes one of the most influential students at Bullworth. Jimmy is taking on missions for different characters and gets caught up in the school clique wars. His actions may win him respect from some, but make him enemies of others. During the school year, Jimmy takes classes, completes missions, takes part in extracurricular activities, and explores Bullworth and the surrounding areas. The plot does get more complicated in that Jimmy's relationships with the various cliques start to fall apart. He is targeted by a number of rivals as his power grows. Eventually Jimmy has to confront the people who are manipulating the social conflicts in the school and restore order to Bullworth. The story is told in chapters from Jimmy's perspective, covering the school year, and concludes with a final showdown and resolution of the conflicts that have been building over the course of the game.

Bully: Scholarship Edition is a mix of open-world exploration and action-adventure gameplay. Players take the role of Jimmy Hopkins, who is free to roam around Bullworth Academy and the surrounding areas. Main gameplay is completing missions, going to classes, fighting enemies, exploring places, interacting with students and teachers, doing different activities. Jimmy can fight with punches, grabs, throws and other close combat attacks. Depending on the circumstances, he can also make use of various objects and weapons. There are lots of different groups of students in the game and how Jimmy deals with them will affect his relationship with them. Throughout the story, the player will have the opportunity to take on missions for different factions and characters. Classes are very important in the game. The Scholarship Edition includes four more classes to the original collection: Biology, Music, Mathematics and Geography. Finishing classes gives useful rewards and unlocks new abilities or perks. Other than at school Jimmy has the chance to explore the town, participate in bike and go-kart activities, play arcade games, interact with characters and complete optional missions. The game also has plenty of collectibles and unlockables to give players reasons to discover the world beyond the main storyline. Scholarship Edition also features additional missions and content not available in the original release.

Start the game and become Jimmy Hopkins at Bullworth Academy. Follow the mission markers on the map to start story missions. Missions can include fighting, delivering items, helping characters, attending activities or completing specific objectives. Use the movement controls to explore the school and the area around it. Talk to students, teachers and other characters to discover missions and activities. Attend class when it’s scheduled. Rewards can be unlocked and Jimmy's abilities can be improved by successfully completing classes. Punch, grab, counter and throw to defend yourself when enemies attack. Don’t let Jimmy be trapped by two or more opponents. Roam the school and town to find shops, activities, collectibles, minigames, and optional missions. Complete missions for various groups of students to advance the story line and influence Jimmy's reputation. Use bicycles and other available transportation to get around the world faster. Scholarship Edition also features additional activities and minigames. You can explore and find optional content in different areas rather than just going along the main story. As the story progresses through the school year, keep on doing missions and school activities.
