Chrono Trigger is a classic role-playing game about time travel, changing history, and a band of heroes trying to prevent a catastrophe that would wipe out the world. The story starts at the Millennial Fair in 1000 A.D. and follows the young swordsman Crono. While trying out Lucca’s new teleportation device, Crono runs into Marle, the young princess of Guardia, who is travelling incognito. Marle activates the telepod but an unexpected reaction sends her flying through a strange time portal. Crono goes back in time after her, and an adventure begins that will take him over several eras. Crono and his friends travel through different periods in history and discover that the past has a direct impact on the future. Eventually, their travels lead to the discovery of the existence of Lavos, a powerful alien entity who arrived on Earth in antiquity and gradually shaped the development of its history. The heroes discover that Lavos will one day awaken and bring about a cataclysm known as the Day of Lavos that will destroy civilisation in the future. As they travel through pre-historic times, the middle ages, the present age and a ruined future, the party searches for a way to change history. Along the way they meet characters who become important party members, such as Frog, Robo, Ayla and Magus. Each character has their own background and connection to the events of Lavos. It is very much about the player’s actions and the idea of changing history. Characters can go back and see the effect of what they did on future times. This time travel structure allows the game to bring locations, characters, civilisations and events together across thousands of years. Eventually the adventure turns into a battle against Lavos and the forces around it. Different endings are possible, depending on the player's approach to the game and the optional events they choose to complete. The game’s multiple-ending structure is also one of its most recognisable features, giving players more reasons to replay the adventure.

Chrono Trigger is a Japanese-style role-playing game that involves exploration, character development, turn-based battles, equipment management, and time-travel mechanics. As players explore towns, forests, castles, ruins, prehistoric zones and futuristic settings they control Crono and a party of friends. The game uses an active battle system, where each action occurs based on each character's individual speed, rather than having each character wait through a completely static turn sequence. During battles, enemies move and attack, while players can choose attacks, techniques, items, and other commands. This makes it important to manage your timing and party especially during difficult encounters. One of the central gameplay systems involves mixing character abilities together. Certain characters can combine their abilities into powerful Dual Tech and Triple Tech attacks. They let two or three party members work together to make attacks more powerful than any one of them could make alone. Players can decide which characters will accompany Crono in their party. Each character has different strengths, weapons, armour, techniques, and elemental powers. The more powerful the enemies, the more important good party management becomes. The very idea of exploration and progress is built on time travel. Special portals and devices allow players to travel to different eras and complete quests which affect events in other periods. What is now a totally different place in one era might have a different use or look thousands of years before or after. The game also contains optional quests, secret items, powerful equipment, secret encounters, and multiple endings. Many of these elements are not essential to completing the main adventure, so players may choose how much they want to discover the world.

Play the game and begin Crono's journey in the year 1000 A.D. Control Pad – Walk around towns and environments. Speak to characters, investigate objects and interact with important locations. Interacting with NPCs can often provide information about current events, quests, and locations that could be relevant later on. Watch the events of Marle and Lucca's telepod experiment at the Millennial Fair. Jump through the time portal and discover the new era, while still carrying out the objectives given to you by the story. Choose your commands from the battle menu and then select the enemy you wish to attack in battle. Physical attacks are effective against many enemies, while Tech abilities give you magic and elemental attacks with different effects. Observe the frailties of each enemy and employ suitable methods when required. Try different combinations when new characters join the party. Some characters are focused on physical attacks, some can heal, some do elemental damage, some support. Their techniques can be combined for powerful Dual and Triple Tech attacks. Throughout the adventure you can find or buy equipment. Upgrade your weapons, armours, helmets and accessories as better gears are available. You can also use items to regain health or gain other benefits during exploration and combat. The story unlocks access to other time periods, so use the time-travel methods available, to go back or forward in time. Some quests require one action in one time period to effect change in another. Pay attention to the environment and listen to character dialogue, as they can tell you how history has been affected. Players can also do optional quests and discover various endings in the game. Once the main adventure opens up a bit, players can choose to head straight to the final confrontation, or explore more content and prepare their party.
