It all starts in the small, quiet town of Vale, where Isaac and his friends live. The Sol Sanctum is an ancient place in Vale that is filled with the mysterious power of Alchemy. Once, alchemy was a mighty power, a power to shape the primal elements of the world. But her power was locked away, for she was deemed too dangerous. Isaac and his childhood friend Garet get involved in an incident at the Sol Sanctum. In the events that follow, several Elemental Stars are taken, leaving open the possibility that Alchemy could be restored at some point. Isaac, Garet and other friends set out to stop those responsible and the world from changing due to uncontrolled Alchemy. Isaac meets Ivan, a young Wind Adept, and Mia, a Water Adept, along the way. Together, the group travels across Weyard, not only to pursue their enemies, but to understand the true consequences of restoring Alchemy. The party will encounter many towns, ancient ruins, temples, caves and other places. There are many areas with puzzles that require you to use Psynergy to solve them. The adventure unfolds to reveal that their enemies also have their own beliefs and motivations about Alchemy. This adds a complexity to the conflict, which is not just a fight between the forces of good and evil. The story gradually grows from a local incident in Vale to become a much bigger journey, impacting the fate of the entire world. The first Golden Sun ends on a cliffhanger, and picks up directly where its sequel, Golden Sun: The Lost Age, takes off.

Golden Sun is a turn-based Japanese RPG with exploration, combat, puzzles, character development and magical abilities. The player can also explore the world map and visit towns, dungeons, temples, forests, caves and ruins. Players control a party of characters. Combat starts when the party meets enemies. Combat is a turn-based command system, with players able to choose attacks, Psynergy, items, Djinn or defensive moves. Weapons and equipment can be purchased or found throughout the adventure. Getting better gear makes character stats better and fights easier. One of the most important gameplay mechanics in Golden Sun is the Djinn system. Djinn are elemental creatures that can be found by characters and assigned to themselves. There are four main factors: Venus, Mercury, Mars and Jupiter. Different Djinn offer different abilities and influence character classes when assigned to party members. Players can experiment with different Djinn combinations to create different character builds. Djinn also have powerful effects that can be used in battles. Some damage enemies, others heal allies, improve stats or offer other tactical advantages. Psynergy can be used in combat and exploration. Some abilities, for instance, can move objects, extinguish flames, create whirlwinds, reveal hidden areas, or change the environment. This mix of combat and environmental abilities makes exploration a big part of the game. Puzzles in dungeons often require players to think about how Psynergy abilities can interact with the environment.

Start the game in Vale, and watch the opening story sequence. Explore the village and meet characters to get to know the world and the events around Sol Sanctum. As you explore the dungeons, pay attention to environmental objects. Some objects can be moved or controlled by Psynergy. Battles involve selecting commands for each character before the start of the turn. Use physical attacks on weaker enemies, and use Psynergy when elemental magic is better. Experiment with different Djinn mixes. You can assign different Djinn to characters, changing their classes and abilities. If your party’s HP gets low, use healing Psynergy or items. Save your game often, especially if you're entering a difficult area or challenging a boss. See if there are any side paths, they might have equipment, items, Djinn or some other nice reward. When you get new Psynergy skills, you might want to go back to older areas because some secrets are not accessible until later. When battling bosses, figure out their weaknesses and use the correct Djinn, Psynergy, and gear. Keep your party well managed. Keep characters levels and equipment up to date.
