In Jurassic Park for Sega Genesis, players venture into the perilous world of Isla Nublar where dinosaurs have escaped and the island becomes a fight for survival. Unlike several other Jurassic Park games released on different systems, the Genesis version of Jurassic Park is a side-scrolling action platformer developed by Blue Sky Software and published by Sega. Players will be able to explore the island in two different ways: playing as Dr. Alan Grant or as a Velociraptor. You play as Dr. Grant, who must survive the dangerous island, including escaped dinosaurs and other dangers. Grant is equipped with weapons designed to deal with dinosaurs, not just using conventional ammunition. Tranquillizer weapons and sleeping-gas grenades are handy against dangerous creatures, but movement and timing are vital to survival. The Raptor campaign offers a totally different perspective. The primary focus is on survival, exploration, combat, platforming and reaching the end of each deadly zone. The game also is a reflection of the chaos when the dinosaur preserve goes haywire. Dinosaurs become the main threat, and the player has to navigate through environments filled with obstacles, enemies, weapons, health items, and dangerous situations. The aim in the end is to survive the island and to go through the stages that are needed.

Players directly control the character, and the game emphasises action over exploration or management. The most interesting gameplay feature is the choice between Dr. Grant or the Raptor. Grant plays more like your usual action guy. He also jumps over obstacles, attacks dinosaurs and looks around the environment for useful items. The Raptor campaign changes style, with the player becoming the predator, and having to use its abilities to survive. As Grant, players will have to monitor ammo, health, enemy placement and the environment. Dinosaurs can come at any time so you have to be able to react fast. Some encounters demand you attack enemies while others are better handled by avoiding them. The Raptor campaign is more aggressive.” The dinosaur can attack enemies directly but has to deal with both dinosaur and human threats. The different character abilities add an interesting level of replay value to the game as the same Jurassic Park setting can feel different depending on the character chosen. The game is also known for its difficulty. The Genesis version is often described as difficult in contemporary and retrospective player reviews, with hazards and encounters with enemies necessitating repeated attempts to learn the correct path. So the Genesis version plays best as a classic 16-bit action game: easy to pick up, quick to play, but challenging enough that it requires patience and memorisation.

Start Jurassic Park and pick the character you want to play from the choices presented. Choose your side - Dr. Grant or the Raptor, each providing a different gameplay experience. Control Grant to move through the side scrolling stages. When dinosaurs come near jump over obstacles, avoid dangerous areas, collect useful items and use your available weapons. Grant’s guns are particularly important because some dinosaurs are dangerous at close range. Tranquillizer weapons and sleeping-gas grenades give means of dealing with threats while proceeding through the stage. The goal isn't to just kill every dinosaur, sometimes the best strategy is to move carefully and avoid unnecessary encounters. Playing as the Raptor means more hands-on gameplay. Move around the environment, attack enemies, avoid traps and move toward the stage objective. The Raptor’s campaign reverses the usual Jurassic Park survival experience by putting the player in the shoes of the dinosaur, experiencing the island from that perspective. Take care of health and environmental risks at every stage. Some parts require precise jumps or careful movement. The game can be challenging so it is helpful to know where enemies are and where dangerous areas are when trying a hard stage again. Go to different locations and move around till you achieve the campaign goals. The controls are simple enough to begin with but the challenge comes from the difficulty and level design.
