Raziel was once one of Kain’s most powerful vampire lieutenants. Raziel earns wings before his master, and is punished by Kain who throws him into the Abyss. Centuries later, the Elder God revives Raziel as a wraith. As Raziel journeys through Nosgoth, he comes to discover that his former friends have been twisted into powerful and depraved monsters. Each encounter unveils even more secrets of Kain's empire and Raziel's own enigmatic fate. Eventually, Raziel learns that his journey is linked to the ancient history of Nosgoth and the supernatural forces that govern the world.

Soul Reaver features action-adventure combat along with exploration and puzzle solving. Raziel can fight enemies with his claws, weapons and supernatural powers. One of the biggest gameplay mechanics is being able to shift between the Material Realm and the Spectral Realm. Some obstacles and paths are only accessible by changing realms. Raziel can also absorb the souls of fallen enemies to replenish his energy. As the adventure grows on he gains new abilities that let him reach previously inaccessible areas. The game world is a large, interconnected world, not a strictly linear level structure, encouraging exploration and backtracking.

Control Raziel as you explore the different areas of Nosgoth. Fight enemies using your available attacks and collect weapons when they become available. Pay attention to the environment because many areas contain puzzles that require you to manipulate objects or change between realms. Use the Spectral Realm when a normal path is blocked or when an environmental puzzle requires it. Returning to the Material Realm can reveal another route. Defeat vampire enemies and consume their souls to maintain Raziel's strength. As you obtain new abilities, revisit previously inaccessible areas to discover new paths and secrets.
