Marvel: Ultimate Alliance’s story is about a major crisis that threatens the Marvel Universe. A team of super villains starts a sinister scheme that brings heroes from all over the Marvel universe. You take on the roles of Marvel superheroes, working together to investigate the threat and prevent the villains from executing their nefarious schemes. The adventure has a couple of recognisable Marvel locations and characters. As the heroes progress through various stages they have to fight their way through hordes of enemies. The team faces villains and other threats along the way, forcing the heroes to use their individual talents and special powers. The game is based on the concept of the ultimate superhero team. Players can experience the adventure through different characters, rather than one specific protagonist. As the heroes progress, they can earn experience and enhance their abilities. Aside from the action-heavy combat, it adds a light RPG element to the adventure. The GBA version is a simplified handheld version of the larger Marvel story, with side-scrolling stages and fast-paced combat.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is basically a 2D side scrolling action game with RPG elements. In stages, players face off against groups of enemies and sometimes bosses. The player can select from a range of Marvel heroes, each with their own special moves and attacks. The combat is all about moving around the environment and taking out enemies with normal attacks and super hero powers. As the characters progress they also gain experience and improve their abilities. Special powers drain energy, so players must manage their power use through difficult sections. The game also features a striker system. A fourth character can be called in temporarily, though he cannot be played, to unleash a powerful attack on-screen enemies. Besides the main adventure, the GBA version also has additional challenges. These are the S.H.I.E.L.D. Simulator, Time Challenges, Scavenger Hunts and Survival Mode. The side-scrolling design makes the game easy to control, but still with plenty of enemies and combat encounters. Players can move through levels, kill enemies, pick up items, upgrade characters and move to the next goal.

Choose one of the Marvel heroes available and start to make your way through the side-scrolling levels. Use the directional controls to navigate within each environment. Be ready to attack and defend, as you will encounter enemies everywhere in the levels. Kill off normal enemies with your normal attack and try to save your special powers if you can. Special powers are more powerful but they consume energy so managing the power metre is important. Don’t just stand still – keep moving around the enemies. Properly positioning your character and avoiding attacks can make combat easier. If multiple enemies show up simultaneously, use special abilities to strike multiple foes. Use the upgrades you have available to enhance your character’s powers and abilities when he levels up. Use the striker mechanic to deal with groups of enemies or tough battles. The summoned hero can help turn the battle in your favour with more damage. There are some stages with objects and areas you can interact with, so keep an eye out for your surroundings. Learn the enemy’s attack pattern and wait for the perfect time to attack during boss encounters. Play through in different modes with added challenges, complete or progress through the main adventure.
