Story

The adventure begins when the player finds that they have somehow transformed into a Pokémon. After a personality-based questionnaire, the game decides which Pokémon the player will become. Then a partner Pokémon joins the quest and they become an exploration team. The story is about mysterious events that involve time, darkness, legendary Pokémon, and the future of the Pokémon world. The player learns that the seemingly normal dungeon missions are linked to a much greater danger as the exploration team becomes more experienced. The story is split between the main adventure and bonus Special Episodes. The episodes are more character development and explore events involving major characters of the game’s world. Nintendo referred to the game as new stories, new hero and partner Pokémon, and mysterious dungeons that change shape when explored.

Gameplay

Explorers of Sky mixes the classic Pokémon gameplay with the roguelike formula of Mystery Dungeon. Players traverse dungeons of square tiles, with the enemies reacting to movement and actions. Each dungeon has different layouts, pokemon encounters, items, and objectives. Combat is turn-based so position and move selection is important. Learned moves, items, abilities and team tactics can be used to defeat hostile Pokémon. Players can also recruit Pokémon they encounter on their adventures and grow their exploration team. Dungeon exploration isn’t only about slaying foes. Players need to keep track of HP, hunger, available items, status effects and the position of teammates.
