Story
The adventure is set in the Sinnoh region. The player takes on the role of a new Pokémon Trainer, and is given a starter Pokémon, before setting off on a journey through towns, routes, caves, forests and other locations. The player’s rival pops up regularly throughout the adventure and challenges the player to battles. Professor Rowan and his research of Pokémon are an important link to the game's Pokédex and exploration goals. During the game, the player will meet Team Galactic, a group with plots much larger than your average criminal activity. In the end their plans are linked to the legendary Pokémon Palkia and the balance of the Sinnoh region. The player must collect eight Gym Badges, battle increasingly difficult Trainers, fight against Team Galactic, and ultimately challenge the Elite Four and Champion.
Gameplay
Pokémon Pearl is a standard Pokémon RPG with a few new mechanics and systems. Players see Sinnoh from a top-down view and find wild Pokémon in grass, caves, water and other locations. Pokémon can be caught using Poké Balls, and trained in battles. All pokemon have one or more types, strengths, weaknesses, stats, abilities and moves. It is important to know the type matchups because a move that is super effective against one Pokemon may be not very effective against another. Menus and functions are controlled with the Nintendo DS touch screen while the upper screen shows the main adventure and battle information. The game also introduces the Pokétch, which has various applications to help with exploration and gameplay.
