Story
The player is moving to the Hoenn region to begin a new life as a Pokémon Trainer and so the adventure begins. The player starts travelling around the region, and after an early meeting with Professor Birch, receives their first Pokémon. Along the way, players will encounter rivals, find wild Pokémon, visit towns, explore new routes, and take on Gym Leaders for Badges. The main conflict is with Team Aqua, who want to expand the world’s oceans. Their plan is to hunt down Kyogre, a legendary Pokémon representing the sea. The player encounters Team Aqua at several occasions throughout the story, and tries to prevent its actions from disturbing the natural balance of Hoenn. The journey is a mixture of Pokémon training and Gym challenges with a larger adventure that includes legendary Pokémon and the region’s environment.
Gameplay
Pokemon Sapphire features turn-based combat where players choose moves while considering type advantages, Pokemon stats, and battle conditions. Wild Pokémon can be caught and added to the team, and battles provide experience that helps them grow stronger and evolve. Pokémon Abilities and Natures add additional layers of team-building, prompting players to be thoughtful about which Pokémon to train and how to utilise them. Exploration is a major aspect of the game. Players journey through Hoenn's towns, routes, caves, and waterways, collect items, and challenge eight Gym Leaders before facing the Pokémon League. Double Battles mean two Pokémon on each side, and more complex tactics. Pokémon Contests are an alternate activity in which Pokémon are judged for their performance and appeal rather than just defeating opponents. Some locations and encounters use the game’s water-based exploration as well.
