Story

The adventure begins in the Johto region, where the player is given a first Pokémon and begins to explore the surrounding routes and towns. The player meets Professor Elm, who introduces them to the world of Pokémon. The player's rival is a recurring opponent throughout the adventure. In the course of the journey the player must defeat eight Johto Gym Leaders to obtain Badges. These Badges unlock new areas and field abilities and help the player's Pokémon obey in battles. Team Rocket is again one of the main opposing organizations of the game. Their activities bring several important story events to Johto. The player continues to search for more powerful Pokémon and the route to the Pokémon League, eventually confronting the organization. SoulSilver also has the legendary Lugia as a big part of its version specific identity. After the Johto adventure, the player can continue into Kanto, where new Gyms, areas, Pokémon and post-game challenges are unlocked.

Gameplay

The core of the gameplay is to discover the world, catch Pokémon, train and teach them moves, evolve them and battle other Trainers. You can find Wild Pokémon on routes, in caves, in water areas, and other places. The battles are turn based. Players choose moves from a list of moves their Pokémon can learn, taking into account type advantages, stats, status effects, abilities, and the opponent's Pokémon. Exploration is just as important. Different field moves allow players to access new areas that were previously inaccessible. Secret paths, caves, water, optional areas and items all encourage players to return to previous areas with a more powerful party. The game also includes the Pokéathlon, a set of Pokémon sports events, and other features that go beyond the traditional Gym-and-League story.
